Hi all,

I originally came to PS a year ago to work on resetting my pear engagement ring. WELL, you know how this goes - I've fallen hard for antique stones. So instead of a reset, I'm planning on an UPGRADE! Yay me!!

Could anyone offer up an opinion on this stone?? https://www.gia.edu/report-check?reportno=2165184947 I don't have the best pics of it yet, but will pursue getting some video etc if I'm getting a lot of thumbs up from the PS community.

Thanks!

Really quickly, this stone is deep— deep old cut stones carry their weight in their pavilions, and are not going to face up as large as a cut with a shallower pavilion. This is typical of an old mine cut, and setting a large carat weight of this kind of stone often presents a challenge because of its vertical height. The larger table (60 percent) is not typical of an antique old mine cut... I wonder what the crown height looks like. To me, the fact that the stone has a fairly small diameter relative to its carat weight would give me pause. You will want to see its tint (some tints look great to me, some tints are IMO not so good). And don’t let the J color and VVS2 pull the price up if the form factor will be difficult to set and wear. Please post photos when you get them.

Since you shared the GIA link, it will just link the listing page. Anyone can google this.

First, it is not as deep as 75% depth says. The stone is a bit elongated. I adore this shape. I think it is gorgeous. Having that said, it is still deep.
Second, the stone's light performance is not great. It is mushy under the table. It is somewhat expected from a non-branded elogated old mine cut.
Third, the report is from 2014. It is obviously pre-loved. There could have been damage to the stone during the three year of previous ownership, although the stone's girdle is well protected on the bezel setting.

I hope these help you making a well informed decision.

Now that I can see the stone, I’d say it’s a typical old mine cut— they are rustic and wonky but chunky and beautiful. The setting is beautiful— if you intend to keep it in the setting. It might be difficult to put it into any other setting due to its height. It has a huge puffy crown, looks nice to me, but light return isn’t going to be spectacular on this stone. The color is beautiful, the diameter is small for its size. Unless the price is great and you really love it, and you don’t want to reset it, I wouldn’t buy it unless I could see the stone loose to make sure there’s nothing hidden under the bezel.
