Hi everyone. It’s been a while since I visited PS. My husband and I are celebrating our anniversary and I just got the ok to look for a second ring and this particular ring caught my eye. Now I know nothing about Morganite and pricing. What do you guys think about this little beauty currently listed on Costco website. I know maybe I should go with DK and the trusted seller here on PS. But I’m impatient sometime to wait for custom projects. :)

Have you seen it in real life?

I like it but I know nothing about Morganites! What you can do is try to cost it out with a random morganite stone and see how much it costs vs the Costco ring.

Since this is only one ring of thing, Costco doesn’t have it at their warehouse. I really wish they have some sort of system where buyer can actually view these unique ring without having to buy it.

It seems that the price is all over the place on the web.

I love Costco and there are plenty of things for which I would trust their buyers to make my decision. In our area, you can not go wrong with anything in their wine selection and it's been a great way to try a good, pre-vetted bottle of "x" style and know that it will be excellent and representative (think Malbec, Montepulciano, and some that don't even start with M.).

That said, I would not buy morganite for a special ring and I probably would not buy uncommoditized jewelry at Costco. I am sure you have read about morganite treatments and lack of durability. I love the baby pink but it would drive me nuts. Spouse and I both chip up our sapphires despite being careful. I would go with sapphire over morganite. I do not know this price point but I suspect this Costco ring is way less expensive than a built-from-scratch ring centered on a retail-sourced gem -- so there is that.

I also need to think on things for a while. I make mistakes when I rush. My last big purchase I stalked for almost a decade (!). Obviously was not a new car. Paraphrasing Charlie Munger, I need to avoid buying fair things at a great price and focus on buying great things at a fair price. :lol-2:

IMO, this is not a great buy... the color is way too pale (and you can expect it to be worse in person), and morganite should be quite clean. Also, and this is just personal taste, but I think what makes morganite interesting is the orangey-pink hue. This weak baby pink color is rather meh to my eyes. But here's the thing, even top quality morganite is relatively inexpensive. So you're really paying for the diamonds and gold here... and $3,500 for that is a lot. This is just an example, but here is a 50ct. intensely saturated morganite from JTV for the same price as this ring.

Happy Anniversary and good luck!

Hi,

Nice to see back buttercookies. I hope your little ones are doing well.

I think the morganite ring is beautiful. Its in the same family as emerald, and aquamarine, both of course are treated gemstones. This might be a date night ring. It is more fragile than sapphire. and would need to be handled gently.

I think the price is fair and if after purchase you don't like it, you can just go over to your nearest Cosco to return it. I have done this with diamonds without any trouble..

I just saw Autumns comments. I don't like the 50 ct ring. I like the soft pink. I don't like the quantum cut. I don't think its so easy to find a nice morganite. Take some time to compare pricing. I like the beauty of this stone.

Annette

I think morganite is one of those gems where nice stones abound at decent pricing! And it's because they're relatively abundant, almost always heated, and often irradiated. Pink beryl also tends to be very clean and come in large crystals. My example was just to show that a far more saturated and clean stone of 50ct. is a way better value. But this ring is overpriced for a 5ct. washed out stone that may not be eye clean. I think you can get so much more for your money, OP! Here's another price comparison... again, I'm not suggesting anyone buy this gem. But it's a similar color (only better saturation) to the stone in the ring. I'd say it also qualifies as SI clarity. It's 5.14ct... $286.

Like the lighter pink shades... only double the carat weight, but also loupe clean and well-cut? Plus, there would still be money left over to have it set in something similar to that ring. Again, I'm not suggesting any of these stones... I just want you to know there are better options out there. If you've fallen in love with this particular ring, go for it. Worst case, you return it like Annette said. But I'd want my $ to go as far as possible, especially for a piece marking a special occasion.

And here's JTV's entire loose morganite catalogue. Naturally, they're far from the only show in town. I just want you to see how much better you can do at a way better value.

Happy Anniversary! I'm a fan of the large pear size rings, and the ring style is really lovely. That said, I would echo what others have mentioned about morganite and long term durability.

While Costco has a great return policy and usually usually fairly good prices, $3500 is a generous chunk of change to invest in a special piece. While a pink sapphire in that size would be challenging to find at that price point, that budget likely could get you pretty far towards a pink Malaya or Mahenge garnet, or even a pink tourmaline in a similar size. Everyone has different taste and priorities, that's just what I would lean towards.

Hello Buttercookies,

Apologies for being late to this discussion. (Longtime PS member but I only pop in and out intermittently to admire all the eye candy. :)) I found your post while researching a morganite purchase of my own (subject of a separate post).

I recently bought a heart-shaped morganite pendant from JTV after seeing a beautiful morganite inside the jewelry case at Costco. I have to second Autumn in New England. The morganite prices at JTV are more competitive. Having said that, there is also more variability in quality at JTV vs. Costco. (Costco is generally consistent about offering above-average quality, in my experience.) JTV offers a mix of price points from washed out color to very saturated almost “champagne” peach-pink shades of morganite. With the exception of their Park Avenue line and some of their closeout buys, their diamonds accents tend to be inferior and their gold settings are typically lighter weight — all of which help explain why their prices are so much better than Costco.

Based on what I saw in-store at Costco — not a ring but a large pendant — it was similar to what is in the photo but not washed out in the least. (It’s hard even for Costco to capture the subtle color properties in a product photo.)

Upon doing some research and looking at the pricing from gemstone dealers out of Thailand, it looks like the “baby pink" and violet-tinged pink shades of Morganite are more valuable than the more commonly seen peachy-pink or salmon shades.

From the GIA website page on Morganite Quality Factors:

"Morganite’s color range includes pink, rose, peach, and salmon. In today’s market, the pink and rose tints are more fashionable. The peach and salmon hues seem less popular, but some collectors value untreated peach-colored material more highly than heat-treated pink stones."

When it comes to morganite, It’s all a matter of personal taste. Personally, I like the peach-pink in JTV’s trademarked Cor-de-Rosa Morganite line but if investment grade is your goal, do your homework because the price of morganite has quite a bit of variability depending on precisely what color and saturation of pink you’re getting.

As for durability, PS tends to favor more durable colored stones such as sapphire. However, don’t let that put you off morganite if that is what you have fallen in love with.

This is what a certified gemologist writes on the Geology.com website:

"As a variety of beryl, morganite has a Mohs hardness of 7.5 to 8. This is harder than all but a few popular gemstones (diamond, ruby, sapphire, and topaz) and harder than almost any common object that a gemstone might come in contact with. This makes morganite an excellent stone for use in engagement rings, which are expected to retain an attractive appearance across a lifetime of wear."

In conclusion, I noticed that the ring is no longer on the Costco website.

Did you end up buying the ring? (If so, please post pictures!)

I had a jeweler at Zales tell me tha years ago.

I guess the question is whether or not the same is true of other pale colored gemstones, such as Aquamarine? (Also a beryl gemstone?) Or maybe it has more to do with a brownish undertone (too close to a flesh-tone)?

Morganite isn’t for everybody but to my eye it has a distinctive look to it that isn’t really duplicated by sapphire or spinel. I have seen some tourmaline that lands in the morganite ballpark, but in that case the durability is about the same as morganite. :|

Thanks for reminding me to take it slow. I definitely agree with it. It's fun to actually peruse around and look for the perfect thing. My worst fear is chipping the gem or worst complete fracture. I think I definitely got taken in for that beautiful baby soft pink.

Wow this one is really pretty. Thanks for all of the recommendations.

Thanks so much! I agree I think I'm paying for the diamond and setting mostly here. I do love Costco jewelry as they use at least I color and VS clarity on their side stones. It really makes a difference. Unless it's custom made, I really don't see any vendor uses VS clarity.

Hi Smitcompton. Thanks. It's actually good to be away from PS. I save so much money. lol.

The kids are finally going to Kinder. Thank god.

I think I agree with you. I tend to forget it's such a big and soft stone. Probably not good for daily wear. But that baby pink is really pretty. But I think I might have exposed it by posting here because I didn't buy it and it's gone! lol

Thanks for your reply and input. I really appreciate it. Actually, while we were debating, it got sold under my nose! I kinda regretted it. I think it got more exposure by posting here.

But not all is lost. I still love a pear shape ring and fell in love with a ring created by DiamondbyLauren. it's on its way to me by tomorrow. I will definitely post to update you all. <3
