SI1 from GIA cert. Small black spots from side view.
From the top its eye clean. Need loupe to see small inclusion on top.
I didn''t see diamond before purchase.

Should I be worrying about the side view or be happy that its eye clean from the top?
I''m leaning toward getting a cleaner diamond. Should make the vendor happy since I''ll be spending more :)

Replace it if it really bothers you, but try first to think of inclusions as a diamond-birthmark. You can tell immediately that this diamond is yours! And not many people go around casually looking at the sides of diamonds, just the tops.

You could try and see if the jeweler can reset the diamond so the inclusions are less visible from the side too.

Also, all inclusion grading is done through the table, not from the sides, which is why you could potentially see inclusions from the side even in a VVS stone.

HTH! Good luck with your decision. How do you feel about other characteristics of the diamond? Nice light return, good brilliance and fire? Do you like it aside from the inclusions on the side?

ETA: Don't give up on SI stones though! There is a thread on SI stones in Show Me The Ring that you can look at. Many of us on PS have bought SI1s or SI2s with fantastic results, myself included. Explain to the jeweler what your concern is with this stone, and ask him/her to verify that the next stone is eye clean from all angles.

If it were my diamond, it wouldn''t bother me in the least. However, it has to not bother you and your FI. I found a feather that is visable on my stone from one angle, but most other people cannot find it. I wouldn''t give up the stone for the world. In fact, I like it because it feels more personal and more unique. No one else is ever going to look at my stone close enough to notice, so it doesn''t bother me. If your stone is fiery and bright and you won''t obsess over the inclusion, then I''d keep it if I were you.

''Cleaner'' could be another SI1. As a rule of thumb, these stones need to be seen or otherwise inspected for the appearance of those inclusions. If no one saw the diamond between some wholesaler list and you - no wonder there are surprises at the end of the line

And even resetting this one in a more favorable setting (lower and less opened on the sides) with the inclusions hidden would help too.

Unless you are after more than just never seeing those little dots again.

If the stone is beautifully cut and looks good face down, it doesn''t sound bad at all.

I like this a lot.

Thanks for all replies.

The stone is gorgeous. Its a 1.54 I SI1 Eighternity. Everyone says it looks bigger and whiter because of the cut. It beats everything I saw locally.

I looked at a lot of diamonds locally and didn''t see too many with the black spots from the side in my price range. I just assumed the Eighternity would be simliar but now I know SI1 is from the top.

A friend suggested getting another setting with more prongs or where it sits lower to maybe make the black spot less visible.

Wish me luck.

I wish you luck. Having it sit lower will help a lot. Also what about having double claw prongs?? Yummm. Let us know what you decide!!

You can find an SI1 without any visible inclusions from the side. It just depends on whether it bothers you or not. A setting that covers more of the stone from the side would also help.

Remember that an "eye clean" diamond is not from the side view, only face up.

That would drive me nuts. But I''m nuts. How about a lower basket setting...the bar might hide some spots...But as said above, there are so many rounds out there and so many clean stones....What is the return policy...Can you hang on to it for a while and then trade it in when you have found the right stone?

30 day return from GOG.

I wish they had more pics of their settings. They have settings from Eighternity. Might use the couple of grand to get a really nice setting instead of upgrading the stone. Her choice.
