Opinion on a diamond

I am looking for a diamond to put into an engagement ring. My, hopefully, soon to be fiance likes the TIffany etoile half bezel style and we are looking for a local jeweler to design something similar to it.

I am currently looking at diamonds from ERD and I found this one.

Can anyone tell me why it is so cheap? Also would it be a canidate for a bezel setting? Is there anything in particular I should be looking for?

Because it's too deep and the table is too large. It also looks like it has a noticeable inclusion but I'd double check with them. What's your budget and size?

My budget is 8 thousand for just the diamond and I want something larger than 1 ct. What is most important to us is something that is close to eye perfect with an excellent cut. We are willing to give a little on color. My main goal is to get the most bang for the buck.

has she tried on the Etoile? the thickness corresponds with the diamond diameter, it is a very heavy look.

Perhaps something that tapers? http://www.sholdtdesign.com/Vashon/R3791D.htm

I would probably look for something that has a medium-slt thick girdle, since the Etoile is a half bezel design.

Table is fine, but crown is a bit steep for that pav. Bad candidate for a bezel IMO unless you can see the stone in-person or have your rep confirm (with IS) that there's no leakage (light escaping out the bottom of the stone) under the table... it's possible if the crown & pav were rounded up and LGF rounded down and the stone has decent optical symmetry, but no way to tell from the report.

Here's a thread that discusses the effects of bezels on light return in rounds - pay especial attention to Karl's posts: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/does-a-bezel-setting-change-and-or-decrease-light-return.146618/page-2
The etoile is a half-bezel so I assume the effects are less pronounced than with a full bezel, as long as the bezel doesn't rise above the girdle significantly.

I have the Sholdt semi-bezel with an emerald cut diamond & I love it!
If she wants pave then I seriously think you should contact Pearlmans & ask if they can send you the model ring that JulieN linked to set with cz's to try on. Pearlmans is very popular here and has very competitve pricing on the Sholdt settings. They handled the setting of my diamond and it was a wonderful experience.

I'll let the experts on here help you choose your center stone. Just wanted to give a big thumbs-up to the Sholdt setting.

If she still wants the Etoile here's a rec for a great jeweler who makes that setting, they are in Chicago but will do long distance work and set outside stones if you tell them you're from Pricescope. link: http://www.dimendscaasi.com/build/step1.asp?prodID=1A3E1

I like the recommendations of vishke8, especially the B2C stones, they have great prices.

Thank you every one. All of the insight has been very helpful.

I completely understand what you all are saying about the Etoile. My girlfriend is a very tiny girl and has very small fingers. I keep on telling her the the Etoile is too thick but she responds that she loves the thick and chunky look and wants something different than anyone else. She has very good taste though and I know that she has a better eye for this stuff than I do so I am trusting her.

She has not been able to try on an Etoile, we have been to local jewelers and she tried on some 8mm thick gold rings to get a feel for what she wants. She was very excited when she saw how it looked on her hand. My main concern though is how such a chunky setting will affect the light performance of the diamond. Since I am spending so much on the stone I want to make sure that it shines like no other.

Does anyone know if hafl bezel rings like the Etoile have a noticeable negative effect on the light performance of the diamond?

My apologies but I missed the link posted earlier in this thread. Please disregard my question about light performance.

It's very nice, you should email WF to ask if it is eye-clean from the sides and if it is suitable for an Etoile style half bezel.
