Hi everyone,

I've been lurking around Pricescope and independent jewelry shops and finally very close to purchasing the ring for my long term missus.
I was firstly adamant on a D-F color, VS2+ clarity, 3EX and around 1-1.2carat diamond.
After reading online and seeing the diamonds in person opted to below diamond 1.4c | G | 3EX | SI2.

I have seen the diamond in person, face up is eye clean in my opinion BUT as per the GIA cert 3-4 O'Clock area it seems slightly less shiny or ever slightly cloudy not really noticeably (maybe mind issue) ? Also, I can see an inclusion from the side view which I was advised can be hidden through the 6 prong setting I'm hoping to set it on.

The HCA shows 1.4 which is better than any other diamond I've seen in person so far.

Any opinions will be much appreciated!

Thank you!

If you've seen in person and you're happy with the clarity, looks like a good bang for buck diamond. Be advised clouds and clarity issues are much more visible in a dirty diamond after some wear, and far less visible in the halogen fuelled lighting of the jewellery store.

Ensure you have a good refund policy before in case these things bother you afterwards.

How much is it?

Hi gm89uk,

Thank you for your input, appreciate it.
I've only seen the diamond in the jewelry store with the halogen fueled lighting you mentioned. The diamond looks fine there but wouldn't know if it will be true at every environment. With just the GIA cert would it be decent at around $10.5k USD (inclusive of 950Platinum 6 prong setting)?

Before you purchase you should ask to see the diamond in various lighting conditions (outside, back office under fluorescent lighting, etc).

It's very possible the inclusions at the 3-4 o'clock are interfering with the light return of the stone. Remember that light comes in, bounces around and leaves. Depending what is in the way, that path can be disturbed and have a negative effect.

You have the advantage of seeing the stone with your eyes which is powerful, but if you aren't use to looking at diamonds they may not know exactly what they are seeing. Also with experience comes the ability to trust what you see. It's very rare to find an SI2 that is truly eye clean, so I have a feeling what you saw isn't simply a mind issue. Big assumptions I know, but remember you will have to live with this "forever" assuming you never upgrade or trade out.

Also I might warn that while the stone has good proportions, it is pushing boundaries as well. This isn't necessarily bad but you may want to see if they can provide you an ASET or idealscope of the stone. This would show if you are getting any leakage.

The HCA, while useful, is mainly examining proportions and because of the way every GIA cert uses rounded and averaged crown and pavilion angles can't exactly predict everything. It's a good tool to make sure you are in the ballpark, but the images I mentioned would help seal the deal assuming the inclusions aren't creating issues.

I am not sure the value of the setting (by itself) that you were quoted but here are a few alternate super ideal options.

1.325 F SI1 @ $10,937

1.232 G VS2 @ $9,678

I wouldn't pay that much for an SI2 + setting that didn't have pretty perfect proportions.

Here are some better choices (I think). This one has clouds, but since it's in house you can call good old gold and get their honest opinion on whether it impacts light performance.

This one looks scary in video, but I'd also call them to see how noticeable the inclusion is in real life.

I'd want an ASET or more advanced images of this one, but it's another possibility.

A platinum 6 prong setting (if it's the "classic" tiffany style one), will be a little over 1K (between 1200 and 1500 depending on where you get it from and whether you get a "designer" version).

The stone you saw has potential, but I worry about the clouds and whether it's actually eye clean outside of store lighting.

If you want the best bang for your buck, call yeukietil (can't spell) at ID Jewelry in NYC. He has a gift for finding "unicorns" (truly eye clean SI2s) and for working miracles on a budget. I wouldn't buy an SI2 before checking with him about what he has.
