Hi everybody, it''s my first post here~

Friend of mine is considering this stone and is asking for my opinion. It has got an extra facet (cert attached) on the pavillion.

I do know a little about diamonds but have virtually no experience with high quality larger stones with an extra facet. I was not able to see the stone either. Should he be concerned about the impact of the facet, and should it command a large discount over a EXEXEX IF stone without the extra facet?

The parameters of the stone otherwise seem good:

Measurements: 6.92 - 6.95 x 4.28 mm
Carat Weight: 1.25 carat
Color Grade: F
Clarity Grade: IF
Cut Grade: Excellent
Proportions:
Depth: 61.7%
Table: 56%
Crown Angle: 34.5°
Crown Height: 15.0%
Pavilion Angle: 41.0°
Pavilion Depth: 43.5%
Star length: 55%
Lower Half: 75%
Girdle: Medium, Faceted (3.0%)
Culet: None
Finish:
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Very Good
Fluorescence: None

Cheers and thanks in advance!

well, it's not EX/EX/EX...

anyway, I'm going to guess "no discount" for the extra facet. why should there be a discount?

G6ET,

First things first. Welcome to the Pricescope forum.

The certificate states that the diamond has an extra facet, but this is not what people traditionally call an "extra facet round brilliant". That term normally means that the facet pattern has been modified from the traditional round cut pattern to incorporate larger amounts of extra facets to achieve specific optical results, greater scintilationa, fire, etc. There are "extra facet round brilliants" with many different numbers of facets, anywhere between 60+ and 120+.

The diamond you attached the certificate for is a standard round brilliant with an extra facet cut to probably help achieve the IF clarity grading. You must evaluate it as a traditional round brilliant, not as a "extra facet round brilliant".

The amount of discount the extra facet will bring is really a matter of opinion. How much does it affect the beauty of the stone? Every diamond has its feature. Diamonds in this category are genuinely rare, so I would not expect too much in terms of discount.

Best of Luck.

Ditto Julie and Jonathan, you often see extra facet in very high clarity grades as in some cases doing this can help remove an inclusion and increase the clarity grade, it is nothing to be concerned with and I don''t think a discount would be forthcoming because of it.

Thanks for the feedback!

Those were exactly the kind of info I need. Now he will just have to judge the stone the same way as any other brilliant rounds.

he can probably hide the facet under a prong anyway.

re: price, Julie you''re right, just price it as a EX/EX/VG~

thx again

I really doubt it will be visual to the naked eye anyways.

HAHA true but then again telling him that it *can* be hidden under a prong will probably be reassuring for him.

cheers~
