Thanks to all of you for helping me pick out my diamond. Now all I need is a nice ring to put it into. I know that I want a 18k gold knife edge solitaire ring with 4 platinum prongs. It''s a fairly basic setting, and they have one at James Allen where I bought my diamond. Unfortunately, however, the particular manufacturer for this ring can only use 950/50 Ir for the prongs whereas I prefer 900 Plat for the extra hardness. I am especially concerned about this because I am putting a fairly expensive diamond into a 4 prong setting so I''m somewhat hesitant. Am I getting worked up over nothing?

1) Will 900 plat prongs be more secure than 950 plat prongs?

2) If so, are there any mass production online jewelers (or any in Michigan) that work in 900 plat? I''m not really looking for a custom piece or anything.

3) Since I bought my diamond at James Allen, they will take responsibility if it is damaged during the setting process. However, my apraiser says that this is quite rare and that I shouldn''t worry about it. True?

Thanks again.

Here is a link to an explanation of the various platinum mixtures.

Pt900 is not harder than Pt950. Pt950/Ru is harder than Pt950/Ir.
