One ring versus options

Hey everyone, I know this has been a topic discussed before in varying degrees, but I wondered if there are others who have consolidated their collections in favor of having one ring- one engagement-y ring?

Right now, I have a few rings that fit in the engagement category. I wear some as RHRs. They range in size and color, and I like having options. But as I am always drawn to nice, big shiny objects, I am considering selling/trading in 2 of mine (maybe 3), to help fund the one ring. I feel like there might be a lot of satisfaction with paring down and then I could move on to other bling projects when funds recover and the mood strikes that won't be as major - like bands and stackers.

This one ring I am considering is about 1mm bigger than my largest diamond, but a few shades higher. I don't know if this trade off sounds crazy, but nonetheless, I am contemplating.

Has anyone done this? If so, have there been regrets or maybe a sense of freedom? I realize this is totally subjective, but I would love to hear some thoughts. I love this community and like some, don't have a lot of friends/family who share in this obsession - er, hobby. :D

So true for me too, I just had a big smile while reading this and my husband was so baffled by that I had to “confess” about this forum...

I don’t have any particular opinions on your particular trade as I only have a few items in each category of jewelry. Hopefully others will chime in. My general rule for myself is to really consider something that I don’t have yet and only purchase After I’ve considered for a good while. It is very hard after spending time on here tho!

I just did this! I had a lot of high end gold (18, 21, 22 karat gold) that I never wore! And there was no safety boxes available at our local bank so I had to constantly worry about hiding the gold, especially when we had our cleaning company come over! Plus I am not really into gold. I am more into diamonds and all the diamonds that were mixed in with the gold were cubic zirconia! So I decided to bite the bullet, sell all of the gold (some were my mom's pieces ), took the money, bought the stone from BN, customized the setting through Kay's diamond upgrade program (my wedding set was bought from there), got my ring 2 weeks ago, and no regrets whatsoever! I get more use out of this ring than anything else!

Many people here sell things to buy new things! But many also have more than one diamond ring. So my advice is, if you have things you don't absolutely love and wouldn't particularly miss, may as well sell them and put the money towards something you want more! The downside is that sometimes that means losing some money. But in the end, it's good to have a collection of fewer great pieces than a huge amount of mediocre things...that's my philosophy anyway.

If I had the means to sell pieces to make some money to purchase something bigger, nicer, or add a dream wish list item to my collection, I’d do it, in a heartbeat.
My deal is, I’m extremely sentimental. To “upgrade” my ER EC, I’d have to save from scratch; I’ll never part with this diamond. I’ll just move it to my RH, and wear the upgrade on my left with my WR.
Another struggle I have is, if I decide to get a bigger ER center diamond, do I want a larger, higher clarity EC, or do I go with a large Yoram Octavia?
Decisions, decisions...
I do hope you take the leap & make a new purchase!! I can’t wait to see it!!!

Thank you all for taking time from your Sunday to chime in! I really appreciate it! I am leaning towards making this happen. I will definitely ponder a bit more, but do feel like I would regret missing out if I didn't make it happen. :D

@Rubybrick - I am glad my post made you smile. =)2

@BlingBlingLova - thank you for sharing your account. I am glad you made something you are enjoying every day.

@diamondseeker2006 - thank you for your wise words. While I like options, I think having one spectacular piece would be really nice.

@Matthews1127 - thank you for your input. Reading your response makes me excited about this prospect.

@virgo9 your dilemma is really not that unusual! I traded in two diamonds and invested additional funds to obtain the size and color that I really wanted. I can tell you that I am happier with my new ring now, but the decision is really individual. As DS said, if you don’t consider that you will miss some of your pieces, sell them and save the funds to be invested into your upgrade. =)2

Thank you @SimoneDi for your response! I will have to look up your threads!
2018 is the year of declutter for my husband and I, so starting in the jewelry box is probably a good start. =)2

I held on to a gold pendant that belonged to my late aunt. It was the melted down wedding ring of my late uncle she had made after his passing. She passed in the late 1990,s. Fast forward about 10 years of it just sitting in my jewelry box...I traded the pendant and some orphan gold earrings in on my ring wrap. It helped defray that cost of the two quarter ct. stones on the wrap. No regrets. Not even a twinge ...I was an heir..they did not have children.

" I am considering is about 1mm bigger than my largest diamond, but a few shades higher."

A few shades higher? That usually means going from up the color chart to something that is whiter...going down in color means something with more
tint.
D/E/F - high colors
K/L/M - lower colors

So is the trade off going bigger but LOWER in color? I think a lot of PSers do this when they realize that a well cut stone does not really show a lot
of color from the top. By lower I mean like "I" vs "G". They trade up/sell until they reach the size they want (when you think its too big...you are
probably at the right size because DSS sets in and "too big" ends up being just right). A lot of people stop there at least for a while. Later they
realize they'd like some other shapes or maybe a 3 stone for versatility and start saving for more than 1 ring. Some people stick with just one e-ring
and go for stackers or various RHRs. All just personal preference.

I personally would take the trade off of size vs color as long as the color isnt any lower than than I/J. On the other hand, if its an OEC most people
go lower like L/M/N.

Fun dilemma to have!

I am a "one ring to rule them all" type of gal when it comes to my ering... I sold several rings that I'd been collecting since college to help pay for my upgrade. I do have two new right hand rings and [way too] many bands. I need to sell a bunch of stuff! Geez! ;)

If I had the means to sell pieces to make some money to purchase something bigger, nicer, or add a dream wish list item to my collection, I’d do it, in a heartbeat.

Me too, @Matthews1127! Me too!! I'd gladly sell literally every ring I had to upgrade to an 11+ mm MRB or OEC! Unfortunately, I don't think my "earnings" would come close to paying for it. But... a girl can dream! ;)

I also am a "one ring to rule them all" person. I sold almost everything I had but my upgrade diamond to buy two horses. Now that I have recouped, I reset my diamond and am happy as a clam. I am thinking of selling my most of my bands as well because they don't go with my new ring and I don't wear them. I will have to think on it a bit before doing something so drastic.

Thank you @tyty333, @msop04, and @redwood66 for chiming in!

Yes, this upgrade would be a higher color - well, from the largest diamond I have which is an O-P, the contender is an L. I am clearly not too color sensitive which is good as those are definitely out of budget! Maybe someday.... 8) I would love to go bigger than 1mm more, but that too is not possible right now. :wall::$$):

I've done that more than once. TBH, I only have a few regrets about some of the pieces that I sold. But to be even more honest, I replaced most of rings that I sold within a year, leading me to wonder why i sold them in the first place. Lol. What can I say. It's an illness!! I did learn not to sell my irreplaceables, which my hubby helped me to define as:will you ever find that piece again at the price that you paid. That is my litmus test. So I keep a lot of my Art Deco pieces.

My thoughts from my personal perspective only. There is definitely NO right or wrong when it comes to this issue. It is what makes your heart sing and what rings you will enjoy wearing.

I am an ORTRTA type of gal. I have right hand rings that I rarely wear. I don't love wearing a lot of jewelry at once so truly wearing my ER and band(s) is enough for me and I don't love the feeling of more rings on my hands. Though I love the look for me I prefer just wearing one main ring.

So that brings me to your decision. Would you enjoy and wear multiple rings at once? Or would you just reach mainly for your ER? Will your rings be worn and loved or will they be generally sitting in the jewelry box unworn and alone?

I break it down like this...price per wear. So I don't mind spending a lot of $$$ for a ring I will wear almost every day vs a ring I will wear only once a month or less.

But others happily wear many rings every day. Comes down to your preference and your preference alone.
Good luck with your choices!
