If set in a yellow gold setting, would it be ok to have a thin platinum bezel around a J color stone? Or would that look too yellow? TIA!

A thin platinum bezel would be ideal for a J stone! It''ll keep it bright and white looking.

Wrong

Thick yellow will work better, the J can look like H/I in the type of better lighting that makes the J look like K.

Platinum will highlight the color difference via contrast; you will nearly always see the color is more yellow than the white metal

Garry,
I have disagree with you for well cut stones under 1 carat. I have a 0.88 J OEC that measures close to 6.0 mm set in a platinum bezel and it looks as white as my 0.43 ct ideal cut RB which is also set in a bezel. I have no personal experience with J stones larger than 1 carat in bezels though, so I cannot comment on that.

You can look on Faye Cullen's website and see all kinds of low colored (not that j is really low color-but you know what I mean) stones set in platinum. Granted you are looking at a computer image not IRL. Maybe it could give you a bit of perspective. I doubt those stones are that well cut, though--so they may show more color that a well-cut j..... www.faycullen.com

Not sure I agree with this, Garry.

I had always heard it was better to set lower colored stones into yellow metals, and I thought that was pretty much the conventional wisdom on it. I subsequently learned that many feel surrounding a lower colored diamond with yellow gold actually amplifies the appearance of color.

To me, that made sense. It's like drawing out a non-dominant color in a multi-colored pattern; if it has a touch of green and you paint the surrounding walls green, the green appears more prominently in the pattern.

Add to that the fact that diamonds pick up color in their surrounding environment, and it would seem more logical to surround it with white metal.

I can only speak for what I actually have. I have a J stone in my halo pendant. The halo has yellow gold on the outside rim, but the inner bezel and surround melee are in platinum, and I think the stone looks quite colorless.

I would also like to add that a diamond''s color is most visible from the side and not the top. A bezel will cover up the side and I think it therefore a great way to make the diamond look whiter since you only see the bright top of the stone.

I''ll be able to put in my two cents next week when I get my bezel J earrings. I admit, I am a bit nervous about it since I am a "F" girl, but we''ll see!

I hate it when I come back see I missed a critical piece of information in my post.

Personally, I think a (killer, well-cut and accurately graded) J stone in a platinum bezel would look FABULOUS!

Garry, don''t be so yellow-ist. I move that from now on we call all diamonds of low color "warm white." Hmph.
