One diamond darker than the rest.

I just got my Ritani e-ring today and I didn''t notice, til now, that one of the diamonds is darker than the rest. I''m not sure if this was pre-existing condition and I just didn''t notice this in the store or if something happened during the setting.

I wonder if any PSers might know what would be a reason behind the diamond being so dark and if anything can be done about it

This one is less dark, but the diamond is still darker than the others. The first one, i think, looks a lot darker because I got a picture of it''s "arrows" (loosely defined)

Hmm..there has been a couple threads about this lately by Old fashioned Girl with the same problem in her ring.
I am unsure whether this is caused by the same issue, though it may help you to look through her thread and see if its familiar?

Take it back to the store before your time runs out....quickly. I think their stones are supposed to be a certain grade or higher...you could justly argue that this was not the case with this one...look they have people sorting out these stones very quickly...one slipped in...I am sure they are not set by Mr. Ritani in his cozy workers bench. It is probably more like an assembly line.

Thank you arjunajane. That thread was helpful. Poor OFG. My problem is similar, but not quite the same. At least I think. The diamond in question is like a shade of light gray when compared to the rest of the stones beside it. No matter what angle you look at it. It''s just an overall grayish color - even when I look at it through a H&A viewer. The stone just looks gray. The darkness is more pronounced when it''s looked at face on.

the first step is always a good cleaning.
once its 100% clean with no gunk on the pavilion then it can be accessed.
An ideal-scope will tell if its a cut problem in a few seconds but have it cleaned first.

Thank you Storm. I just recieved the ring this morning, but I guess you''re right. 14 hours is quite a bit of time for it to get dirty. I''m going to Shane Co first thing tomorrow and get them to clean it real good and see if they understand what I see. What i am afraid of is that the lighting in the store might camouflage this flaw. Maybe why I didn''t see this in the store. They''re lighting is natural light mixed with flourescent bulbs.

I''m debating on wether to see my appraiser first and then head to Shane Co, or just go to Shane Co.

if it is dirt it is from the polishing compound most likely.
it can be hard to remove sometimes.
Its not likely something you got on it in 14 hours or it would be on all the stones.
block the spot lights in the store to see it before the cleaning then check the same way after to see if it helped.

It sounds like Strm may be right - that pesky polishing compound..
I agree to take it back for a good clean - if it helps, take it out into the natural light before okaying it.

I took it to Shane Co to address the problem. The salesperson that I showed the ring to said that she noticed it right away too. They cleaned it, but it still came back dark. The jeweler thinks that maybe there's something withing the setting making it look dark. They're going to pop the sucker out to see if it's the setting and dirt or the diamond itself that's causing the gray. If it is the diamond, they're going to replace it with another. There's already a match available (one was taken out of the original setting to make room for a head). It will take about 3 days. So, I'll just have to wait some more. I'm okay with that, though. Just as long as it's fixed.

I just have to share this anecdote about Shane Co. I don''t mean to thread hijack, but your story reminded me of this. Last weekend my G/F and I stopped into out local Shane Co. and traded in her RHR I bought her for her b-day about 4-5 years ago, but has since outgrown; and her 1/2 ct. diamond earring studs for set of 3/4 ct. diamond studs. Later that week, I picked up her e-ring from being completed. It looked small to me but I was sure to size it before I left - it was 5 1/4 - just like it''s supposed to be. I was curious, so I called the Shane Co to confirm the size of her RHR we traded in (this was 4:30 PST). Unfortunately, it had already been shipped to their corporate office which was closed. The salesman who sold us the earrings went out of his way to call the corporate office and track down the ring we traded in to have it sized. He called be back at 9:30 the next morning to confirm the size of her RHR to be 5 1/2. I was very relieved since her e-ring was custom made to have diamonds completely around the band and would have been a PITA and expensive to be resized. Although I didn''t buy her e-ring there, Shane Co will continue to receive my business in the future.
