I''ve been posting here for ages but fairly infrequently and the BF and I are starting to seriously look at settings. I have had my heart set on the holy grail of a -- a Leon Mege halo setting -- but alas I do not think that will be a possibility at this point. So.....

My BF had bought me a very pretty, dainty emerald and diamond band (which I will post shortly) for X-mas but it was not sized correctly and cracked on resizing

. So I went back to the jeweler (non-maul) he purchased from and they very easily and happily ordered me a new one in my correct size. Which is lovely.

When I went to pick it up I tried on a few settings (no pics yet) that I loved (all halos with round centers) and I cannot believe I truly think I''ve found THE ONE. Price tag was more than $4K but after the "wholesale" discount (giggle giggle about how that really works) the setting will be $2800. Stones in the setting are not certified but estimated at F/G VS1 (very small melee and a few .1-.2 side stones).

And I can''t believe I am saying this but I think that this is the setting I will go for, because it''s EXACTLY what I am looking for and I will still be able to afford a significantly sized center -- maybe a 1.25 carat. I was originally estimating 4-5K for a setting but this one (18K white gold) is at $2800 -- if I choose platinum it will be an extra $900 which is even not so bad for an elaborate setting.

So beyond being embarassed that I may buy from B&M and I definitely excited. We''re still at least 6 months from engagement but I hope that my FFI will be happy with it as well . . .

Anywhoo, thanks for all your help -- I''ll be sure to post the stone and ring as we move forward!

There is nothing whatsoever wrong with buying a setting locally! In fact, it makes a lot of sense for maintenance reasons. The main reason to buy diamonds online is for the superior quality at competitive prices. There is not that much of a price advantage for buying settings online.

But congrats on choosing a setting! That is exciting!

Ok I am having a WICKED time upload photos -- any ideas? they all seem too blurry and too LARGE to upload?? Any words of wisdom on this?

I have only had custom pieces made by top top notch jewelers so this is "throwing" me off a bit -- I truly never thought I would by from a jeweler but I have seen this setting now 3 times and can''t even look at anything else in the case!!! I feel like I''m being disloyal :-))))))))))))

Ok so here''s another Q while I try to figure out how to post pics -- if I buy from one of our online reputable diamond guys how does having it set locally affect the upgrades policies (Whiteflash, GOG, ERD etd)?????

Ok, I am going to try and post a hand pic - we''ll see what happens . .. oh this isn''t working!!!!!!!!!!!! how small do i have to go???

ok i can''t seem to get the pic thing right! hep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try reducing the image resolution if all else fails email the admin to help you

also make sure to use a unique name not already on the forums :)

the message i am getting is that the files are still large even after i reduce?

Where you buy the setting has no effect on the upgrade policy for the diamond. It will be up to you to have a new diamond set in the existing setting by altering the head, or if that is not possible, buying a new setting.

Reduce your image size until it is about 4x6 inches and it should fit. Be sure you name each picture a unique name or it will not post.

You just have to keep on reducing until it fits!

OK, so I''m a newbie here, but I have a question (as a new to the diamond shopping fray):

To slyons29, but anyone feel free to chime in.....why "So beyond being embarassed that I may buy from B&M and I definitely excited"? Why should this bring any embarrassment? Is shopping local rather than online some sort of diamond taboo? Carry some sort of stigma? What am I missing?

I am still having problems resizing photos -- in Photoshop I can only get them down to 114KB which is still to high. Any recos?

tx!

That comment was sort of meant tongue in cheek -- everyone on this site is really particular about jewelry and I had always "thought" that when it came time to get engaged that I would absolutely go custom. So my point was that you can have your heart set on something and then, miraculously, a girl can change her mind!

It IS a woman''s perogative

I always go to regular old Paint, and scale it down to 30% or so. I wanna see this thing!

Oh, c''mon now, I''ve never known a woman to change her mind

. J/k of course--thanks for the clarification....

Ok, I think I may have figured this out

I had read on another thread that if you buy your setting from B&M and your diamond from an online vender to send your setting to the diamond vender and let them set it. That way if something happens to the diamond during setting the vender will take care of it for you.

Congrats on finding the perfect setting!

That band is very pretty! Do we get to see a hand shot of the halo that has captured your heart?

No worries where the setting is from, you loving it is what matters the most!
That is a lovely band, very pretty on your hand!
