Older diamond needs a recut makeover - cutter recommendations?

Hi All,

I have a RB 1.5ct. diamond that was purchased almost 30 years ago ... comes with a GIA cert, but was from a time when the consumer focus was more on clarity/color vs. technicalities of cut (my how times have changed!!).

It''s a VVS1 with I color and has brought me joy for many years however it does have a 64% table and I believe 62%+ depth. Yes, you can see the fisheye, but still is quite lively/sparkly & currently mounted in a pendant. I don''t have any crown/pavilion angles or any other measurements.

With all of my research on PS, I would love to get it recut to maximize its beauty and to feel really good about it. Can anyone recommend a fab diamond cutter? Anyone else been through the process? Approximately how much of the diamond weight will I lose to turn it into an ideal knockout? Your help/input is so appreciated!!
 
Oh yes, approximate cost as well???

Start with these chaps then see how you get on, they should be able to point you in the right direction. Prices vary according to what you have done, one of our members had a recut recently, it isn''t too expensive in my opinion, but someone may be able to chime in with a ballpark figure.

Also with the recut, weight loss depends on what needs doing and to what standard you want the diamond recut to, but one of the experts will be able to advise you on that as above - and the weight loss may not be that much.

Hmmmm, just had an interesting phone conversation with Bill Bray ... looked at archived threads on PS as well.
who has had a success story with this cutter? He said that his method of cutting is different from Whiteflash due to his BrayScore. After the cutting is over, I wanted to send the stone to GIA for recertification and I asked a question re. finish and he told me that he couldn''t guarantee an "excellent" finish because he doesn''t have a lab near him to keep confirming grading.
Thoughts anyone??

I don''t think an EX finish is necessary. Sometimes, it is very difficult. Bill is probably assuming that Whiteflash will cut it to H&A standards. Depending on the current proportions, you might lose a lot of weight/diameter to try to go to H&A.

So you have to know what''s possible and what your stone will lose in order to get that.

when i had the 1.47 ct recut....

$750 per ct for an H&A $1300 per ct for an 8*

I also read the "Diamond Liposuction" thread and I''m getting nervous about losing so much. The question of value, the question of making the right cut choice (H & A or 8*, etc.).
I was hoping to clean up the stone and save it for my son''s future wife one day! who knows what types of cutting breakthroughs will happen in the next 10 years...

who cares.....the 57 facet RB will still be popular 100 yrs from now.
 
Who cares?? We all do - or why else labor and support each other on this forum? Yes, not doubting that the RB is classic, but my comment was geared towards future cutting technologies to refine and continue to make more ideal cut stones, not shape. You went through a recut, not satisfied with the RB you had.
 
I don''t think it is too much of a concern about new technologies in cutting tomorrow...it should not hinder you from having a beautiful diamond today!

b/c i had an no crown height flat top 60/60 stone.

In that case, you might not lose as much weight if the diamond can be lit up with some adjusting perhaps, if you just want it '' cleaned up'' to get some more performance out of it. If you want a superideal born from this diamond, you would probably lose more, but it depends on what you want. I would look at what the likely results would be from a '' tidy up'' if that could improve performance first perhaps if that is an option.
