Hello, after months of looking at engagement rings that fit our budget (around 4k max), I decided I really love the look of the older diamonds. On the spur of the moment we bought an antique ring that we saw and loved (and was significant under budget at £2300). I think it’s old mine cut but I’d really appreciate any thoughts. It’s currently a bit big so it needs resizing and I’m considering getting it reset as the current setting is quite dated and doesn’t let in much light. I’d really appreciate any thoughts on a)is this diamond a keeper and b)styles of setting that would let max light in to increase sparkle and have a lovely vintage look. The ring is 1.4 si/vs2 and around an h. It doesn’t have certification although a jeweller did say it was a very nice diamond. Would love any thoughts. Attached some pics and a pic of the type of setting I’m considering. Thank you,
I think you’re bang on with thinking it’s an old mine cut. It looks to have some nice faceting and should be pretty sparkly assuming you can get in between those prongs to clean it!!
That Ring Concierge setting is one of my absolute favourites and this stone would look gorgeous in it. David Klass has recently done the same setting as someone was showing us the CADs.
Would love to see more handshots when you get it set.
Agree with the old mine cut description, it has the open cutlet and a cushion shape. I think that was a great price you paid! It’s funny how sometimes we vote for keeping a stone in its original setting, but in this case, I think it should be reset. The setting you have in mind is gorgeous! Also if you took the diamond out, you can give it a good clean and polishing maybe?
It’s lovely but I agree would look much nicer in a new setting that showed it off better. I just went through a very similar process buying an Art Deco ring at auction that I took the diamond out of and set in a simple solitaire. I’m posting it everywhere as it’s new and I’m in love here’s a pic. That setting you’ve picked is lovely! As with mine you’ll probably find it looks even better out of the old setting as it’s not letting much light in by the looks of it. Good luck
