Hi there, I am new to this board but have been enjoying reading through your knowledgeable posts!

My family has some old diamonds, and some of them were made into a 5 stone engagement ring for me last Christmas. I contacted Dave Atlas to get his opinion and he suggested I post my q''s here as perhps someone here will have some informations about where to get estate jewelry properly and thoroughly appraised in British Columbia, Canada. Here is some info about the ring and its background:

The engagement ring is made from old estate diamonds from my (deceased) granny who lived in England. I had the ring appraised at a local jewelry store (I now realize this was not the best place to have it appraised) and they provided me with the following info on the centre stone:

.75 carat, VVS1 clarity, J-L colour range. Unfortunately, I did not receive any info re: table, crown, girdle, etc. The stone looks much larger than any .75 carats I have seen in the mall stores (I know, it''s mostly crap in mall jewelry stores anyway!) but I assume this is b/c of the way it has been cut?

The appraiser stated that the ring was an old european cut, but from what I have been learning online, I think it may actually be an old mine cut, as it has a more square shape to it, a large crown, appears to have a very open/wide culet (the ''dot'' is visible when staring at the stone face up). The original jewelry box has a handwritten message dated from 1916, and the box has the town name "Bremen" in it with the jeweler''s name "Wilhelm Frolich".

I would like to know if anyone is able to recommend any appraisal business in British Columbia, Canada that would be able to do a thorough appraisal of this ring--is Maynard''s in Vancouver, BC, Canada a good place to take it to? If anyone can offer any additional information about old mine cut or old european cut diamonds, I would be most appreciative. My parents have a number of old diamond rings and diamond pendants, as well as a box full of old estate jewelry --cameos, bracelets that are believed to be from Persia, ivory brooches, etc-- from my granny and would like to know where to get their value and quality properly assessed so it can be insured appropriately.

I thank you for your time, and I look forward to your response.

I'm sorry; I don't have any information for you. However, I am quite jealous. I love antique jewelry and think there's nothing better than an OMC diamond. You are very lucky to have such treasures!

Hello:

From a fellow PS member, I gleaned some information regarding the appraiser he used in Vancouver--after purchasing a diamond from Britton Jewellers, also in Vancouver. It is as follows:
Michael. L. Toole, Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britian. Suite 621, 470 Granville St. Vancouver. (I am copying this information second hand, so I hope it is ((entirely)) correct.)

At any rate, might I suggest you call and check if appraisals of estate jewellery is within their expertise--perhaps this is a speciality.

Hope this helps. Kind regards,

Sharon

Thanks for the responses!
I love OMC diamonds too--the cut is so unique and catches many people's attention with its sparkle from clear across the room! Gotta love that!

Please, please take pictures and post them! Some of us adore antique jewelry--you'd give us so much pleasure!

I will take some pictures of the antiques with a digital camera (don't own one yet) when I am at my parents' home in the end of june and post 'em ASAP!
This place is great! I am learning sooooo much and am already thinking about what sort of wedding band would be nice for my fiance and what would go nicely with my 5 stone engagement ring...I am leaning towards a wedding band with some small diamonds, either channel set, or prong set, or pave or ??

Hi My name is Joe Keller
I own Kellers Jewellers Ltd in Lantzville (north of nanaimo) on Vancouver island,
I would recommend Jeanne Johnstone appraiser at 606 736 Granville st Vancouver 604 685 8319 shes great with antique jewellery you'll like her.
For your wedding band I would go for a row of bead set diamonds in a thin band looks more like an antique ring to match.

good luck Joe
tell Jeanne Joe sent you
