Hi there, I am new to this board but have been enjoying reading through your knowledgeable posts!
My family has some old diamonds, and some of them were made into a 5 stone engagement ring for me last Christmas. I contacted Dave Atlas to get his opinion and he suggested I post my q''s here as perhps someone here will have some informations about where to get estate jewelry properly and thoroughly appraised in British Columbia, Canada. Here is some info about the ring and its background:
The engagement ring is made from old estate diamonds from my (deceased) granny who lived in England. I had the ring appraised at a local jewelry store (I now realize this was not the best place to have it appraised) and they provided me with the following info on the centre stone:
.75 carat, VVS1 clarity, J-L colour range. Unfortunately, I did not receive any info re: table, crown, girdle, etc. The stone looks much larger than any .75 carats I have seen in the mall stores (I know, it''s mostly crap in mall jewelry stores anyway!) but I assume this is b/c of the way it has been cut?
The appraiser stated that the ring was an old european cut, but from what I have been learning online, I think it may actually be an old mine cut, as it has a more square shape to it, a large crown, appears to have a very open/wide culet (the ''dot'' is visible when staring at the stone face up). The original jewelry box has a handwritten message dated from 1916, and the box has the town name "Bremen" in it with the jeweler''s name "Wilhelm Frolich".
I would like to know if anyone is able to recommend any appraisal business in British Columbia, Canada that would be able to do a thorough appraisal of this ring--is Maynard''s in Vancouver, BC, Canada a good place to take it to? If anyone can offer any additional information about old mine cut or old european cut diamonds, I would be most appreciative. My parents have a number of old diamond rings and diamond pendants, as well as a box full of old estate jewelry --cameos, bracelets that are believed to be from Persia, ivory brooches, etc-- from my granny and would like to know where to get their value and quality properly assessed so it can be insured appropriately.
I thank you for your time, and I look forward to your response.
