Hi there

I am about to buy a diamond on 0.4 carat, IF, F, with Excellent cut. The diamond has a 2 year old GIA report. As far as I can see it has all the correct dimensions etc. It has a girdle which is medium to slightly thick - and a GIA report from 2010. Is this something I should look out for?

A report from 2010 is no big deal - as long as there are angles and a true cut grade. As I said in your other thread, any HCA under 2 is worth investigating further - ASET and IS images would be helpful.

Why such high clarity? That has nothing to do with light performance, you know...

Agreed. Unless you're getting a huge bargain on this ring, you're paying for clarity that in all likelihood you won't be able to perceive - and you're paying in size. You might be able to get a larger stone with the same budget if you'd consider SI1 stones.

IF stones don't move very fast, 2 years might not be unusual.

WOW. Why are you buying an IF stone? That's usually a HUGE waste of money.

And at only 40 points. A small, HUGE waste of money. :?:

That's what I was thinking - probably not much to be concerned about re. wear and tear in the intervening years, it quite possibly *has* been sitting on a shelf somewhere for that long.

There's a reason for that - IF is unnecessary unless you want higher clarity than you will ever have reason to physically/visually/practically appreciate IRL (cultural reasons, you just want high clarity for "mind-cleanliness", etc.)

ETA: *you* may think IF is neat, but if you're buying it for someone else please just make sure your SO shares your priorities before you actually pay 8)

Ouch!

Fully informed, I bought a 0.22 D IF ideal cut round.
Not a waste of money.

Not everyone shares your perspective.
People vary.

Wow... What a great discussion - thank you very much for giving me all these answers :)

The only problem now is that I have no clue on what to do :D

Are you serious about not beeing possible to see the difference between SI1 and IF?

Yes.

SI1 and IF ... you may see a difference. Not all SI1 stones are eye clean so you might see inclusions. VS1 and IF likely not - I can't even find inclusions in VVS / VS stones under a loupe.

Ok, but what I can see is, that I can save 200$ by going to a VS1 from an IF diamond - with the same other characteristics. That's not much :)

I have been wondering a bit whether I should go with a larger stone - but I am pretty sure that my girlfriend would prefer a smaller stone. Therefore I think I will stick with the .4ct.

My main priority is the flare/shine/fire whatever it's called should be optimized. My second priority is that the diamond should be perfect while looking at it - have nice proportions and nice look synchronous.

So what about the color? Could I go with less than F?

The diamond I am looking to buy is:
Carat: 0.4ct
Clarity: Internally Flawless
Cut: Excellent
Color: F
Girdle: Medium to slightly thick (faceted)
Table: 56%
Depth: 62.5%
Crown angle: 35
Pavillon angle: 40.8
HCA: 1.6
GIA report dated: June 20, 2012

You can go down to H VS2, and that is very conservative. Even I SI1 would work very well.

I am going to buy my diamond through Bluenile - I guess that will be a problem if I go for the SI1. Therefore I should probably stick with VS1... And while browsing there, I can only find some for around 1000$... The IF one I presented above costs "only" 1400$... So for 400$ I guess the mind-cleanliness is OK :D However you guys are right - my girlfriend doesnt care about this - it's only me, so might be stupid... damn - it's hard to figure out what to do!

Mind cleanliness is worth a lot. But as long as you know it has nothing to do with light performance...

For mind clean, I need F/G VS1 so I suggest you stick to that.

I really don't want to sound snobby but .4 ct is small and you won't be able to see much. It will be sparkly but pattern wise and even inclusions will be barely visible. I know your gf wants a small diamond or is it she just doesn't want you to spend that much. If the case is latter, have you considered ebay or second hand? You can get probably double / triple the size for the same price.

If you want to give her an IF diamond just because it's and IF, knowing that the clarity grade won't make a visual difference at that size...

If you're aware of your options and the tradeoffs you might be making, especially in size...

if you're willing to pay the financial premium for this grade....

Who are we to tell you not to do so? I can totally understand wanting to give your gf the most perfect diamond possible, even if that perfection is undetectable to most... especially if you're limited in size because of her preferences.

My only suggestion would be to see some of diamonds in that size range in person, if you haven't already done so, before you pull the trigger. I'd even suggest a looking trip with your GF, to make sure that her idea of what constitutes "not too large" coincides with her idea of what constitutes "not too large."

Other than that... stick to your guns! :wink2:

That.

And another point - are you set on buying from BN or will you consider other vendors that provide more info and photos of their stones?

What is LGF (usually btwn 70-85 on the proportions diagram on the report)?
