Old Ering Diamond and Why Certain B&M''s are Evil...

Since I had my ering upgraded and LOVE my new stone I wanted to do something so I could wear my old one as well. I thought it was too small to be a pendant so I decided to put it into a ring to wear on my right hand. Because the diamond isn''t that great quality wise I didn''t want to buy some huge expensive setting for it...so I got this from Jareds for about $350.00. It''s a white gold antique style ring with .16ct diamonds in it. Funny thing is this whole expierience of re setting my old diamond just makes my ire at Gordon''s worse. When I knew NOTHING about diamonds I figured my ring was a 1/2 carat. Thats what they verbally sold it to us as. I thought the center was a tiny below .5 and the baugettes on the side pushed it up to .50ct. Then the first time I had to have my prongs checked/ring inspection I asked my now hubby for the paperwork they gave him for it in which I noticed it was listed as .90ct diamond engagement ring. Wow I thought! .90ct! I figured my center must of been a .50ct and the baugettes like .20ct each! When I first started learning about diamonds I thought NO WAY it my ring a .90ct.....the jeweler who fixed my shank guessed that the center diamond was probably .30ct and the baugettes like .10ct each. A gemologist looked over my center diamond before setting it and this is what he came up with.....
The baugettes in my old ring are .15 each...meaning with my upgrade my ering has a cttw of 1.10ct.
Then for my old center diamond:
.24 carats!! (Good going Gordons with your .90ct paperwork!!!)

Extra facet in girdle and rough spots in girdle

Thank you Gordons...only best of the quality from you! Anyway it''s still sentimental to me as it is my original engagement diamond and in it''s new setting it looks kinda cute and I like it....

Here it is in comparison to my upgrade.... .24ct,J-K, I2 to .83ct,Ideal Cut,G,SI2 was a big jump for me!

You could even stack it with other interesting bands that might capture your fancy..

Thank you....Trust me Widget i''ve already eyed up the stackable bands!!! I''m really extreme when it comes to jewelry....sometimes I love big bold and chunky and other times I am just drawn to tiny and delicate and I love those thin..milligrained??? stackable bands.


I figured $350 wasn''t such a bad price for sentiment

Enjoy your new ring! It''s hard to believe in this day and age that many large chain store retailers still use "form" style appraisals where the
salesperson checks off boxes and "approximate" weights, total weights, color and clarities. The forms are vague and non-descriptive. I don''t know if that''s the type of appraisal that your husband had, but there''s still alot of checklist style appraisals being done every day.

Patty and Matatora...thanks for the compilments! I''m glad I put it in this new setting....I think the smaller diamond does look MUCH better in a delicate smaller setting!

Modified Brilliant - When they sold it to my husband he had two forms of paperwork. One, his recipet. Two a paper they wanted him to bring in with him and get signed every 6 months when we have it checked. There were the months listed in which I needed to take it for it''s 6 month inspection and then a description which was .90ct platinum engagement ring. Good thing it even turned out to be platinum!!! When they sold it to us the back(shank?) was flat. I asked about it and they said that it was SUPPOSED to be that way to not put extra stress on the baugettes. When I was looking for wedding bands one of the associates in an independent B&M asked to clean my ring and he was horrorfied at that explanation. He said it was just very thin and bent. I took it back to Gordons and luckily they fixed it for free and ended up making it thicker. Turns out un bent I actually needed it sized down. Even the jeweler at Gordons admitted the ring wasn''t of the best quality. He flat out told us it was the first platinum ring Gordons ever carried and in order to save cash on the cost of plat they put a really crummy stone in. Gordons never even told me the color/clarity or anything else about the girdle issues. That came from a cert GIA Gemologist and a local B &M around here.....they decided to look at it when I was looking at settings! I''m not one of those people super opposed to B&M''s but these mall stores are just downright terrible with diamonds!
