Old cut experts--what do you think of the photo?

Hi Anna, I'm not an expert but till the experts weigh in my opinion is that I don't care for this diamond. It doesn't look symmetrical and looks to have some visible inclusions. Plus, the faceting seems disorganized and not appealing to my eyes. But take all of this with a grain of salt as I am not an expert and this is just my opinion. Hope the experts weigh in soon and I hope you find the perfect stone for you!

I thought I saw inclusions, also, but it is a dependable vendor who says it's VS1. I wish I could post the video for you to see.

It is really hard to evaluate from a single photo. These old cuts truly need to be evaluated in person to see its true personality. A photo doesn't usually do them justice...though a video might be helpful it depends on the quality of the video. Jon from GOG takes awesome video. Video from him is amazing. But I digress. I am not sure how to post video here. I used to do it via Youtube but Ella said it was against forum rules. Some here have done it through vimeo if you know how to do that.

Don't know about vimeo.

Checked out vimeo but rule is to only post what you video yourself. Guess I'm too much of a rule-follower.

AnnaH,

I recognize the vendor from your photo, found the ring. I have had one excellent experience with that vendor, and three not so great transactions. I kept one of the three items, sent the other two back. Two of the items were not as advertised, one was much more obviously "preloved" than the photos showed...

They do have a good return policy and are easy to deal with for returns.

You may want to check Old World Diamond's stock. They have some similar stones at similar prices.

Thanks, Liz. I did look at old world but didn't see anything that large for around 5k. However, if I go old cut, not sure I have the nerves for Ebay. Old World is probably better for someone new to the old cuts.

Maybe try calling OWD? I read a few times on this forum that Adam has access to more stones than are listed on the OWD site.

AnnaH,

You are basing that on weight alone, not on the actual diamond measurements. I think it's odd that the cert isn't posted.

I'm not necessarily recommending any of these, just posting to show what is available. Call Adam and tell him what you are looking for. He may have some suggestions for you. Of the three I asked about, he recommended the lowest priced one for me. It's off waiting for a setting to be made.

Yup Adam doesn't post a large portion of the diamonds on the website. You need to call or email him.

Anna, I also highly recommend Adam at OWD. He found me my OEC and he was a real doll through the whole process. Made it easy peasy and the whole shopping situation was a pleasure thanks to Adam. He has so much stock too.

If it is the vendor I am thinking, aren't a bunch of folks heading to Chicago to see them? You can ask them to take a look at the diamond for you.

I actually think the diamond is very pretty. There is the kozibe effect which is usually a sign of a well cut diamond. I believe what looks like inclusions could just be a funky photo. Would really like to see the video before judging.

I am working with the vendor on a setting and have seen their stones in person. I have found that the vendor tries to be honest and as accurate as possible but granted my experience with them is limited.

Oh sorry Anna, I didn't know. I've never used vimeo myself.

Let's say it is eyeclean because a (GIA) VS1 is eyeclean for sure. How do you feel about the symmetry (or lack of)? That is the main concern I would have from looking at that photo. But again, it's just 1 photo so it might look very different in person.

Based on Libby's experience I would have a conversation with the seller just to make sure it is worth seeing in person. It can be a hassle to buy and return (and sort of stressful when we are talking about lots of money on the line) but since Libby says they have a good return policy it might be worth exploring. I would just speak about any concerns you have with the seller because I don't like those statistics too much. One excellent and 3 not so great.

Missy,

Cert is EGL USA, not GIA. Return isn't awful and you can pay them to provide the shipping label to return if necessary. They were prompt at returning my money and notifying me of the transaction.

It's just that one item I bought from them was very worn on one side but the photos showed the unworn side (a wedding band that had stepped edges). An eternity band that was advertised as being 1 ct. of OEC diamonds was .66 ct. of MRB, and the OMC ring I got recently was an I1 (in the opinion of my jeweler, whose opinion I trust), not an SI1-2. The inclusions weren't eye visible (smallish diamond) but under a loupe, they were scary (like a loose bundle of black yarn fibers encased in glass). My first purchase from the vendor, an OEC ring, is a beauty.

I did Email OWD last week or so asking about a smaller diamond but then thought I might want to go a little bigger. Emailed again tonight asking about 7mm.
I agree with someone who recently posted that the old cuts look best when larger. If going just around a carat, mrb is usually better.

It looks promising, but I think the table is large for the make which exposes a lot of the (uninterrupted) pavilion mains... it can result in a sort of "glassy" look in the central area in diffuse lighting, or a lot of dark "off" facets in brighter light. But I need a lot more images to know if that is going on here. I prefer a smaller table in this type of make, it improves the optics.

ETA: I am also not an expert :rodent: Just a collector with an analytical mind.

Thanks for all the input. The diamond in the pic might be pretty. The video shows a lot of sparkle. Wish I could figure out how to post it. Would like for you all to see it.
Adam thinks he has some stones and settings of interest to me. He's sending info tomorrow.

Good luck Anna! I hope you find the stone of your dreams! :appl:

Thanks for the clarification Libby.

Dreamer-you're an old cut expert to me and I would trust you to help anyone pick out a beautiful old cut (or new cut for that matter) for sure.

Thanks, Missy. I agree that anyone who scored a ring like D's probably knows a great deal about antique diamonds. If I weren't so cheap, i'd be looking for one just like it. Everyone has been very helpful. I'm taking it all in.
Still waiting to hear from Adam. Will let you know what he comes up with. Hopefully, many of you will be available for comment.

To clarify our video policy you are welcome to post a video made by a vendor regardless of the service. We do not allow posting personal videos to avoid any issues with privacy or inappropriate content.

Thanks, good to know for the future. Am working with Adam presently so will want some input when he finds something.
