Old cut bargain find!

Sorry to hear you lost one of the melee stones! :(2 I hope it turns up! I always get nervous when I acquire older pieces—cleaning them will frequently remove some of the magic “gunk” that’s holding something in place!

I just dropped my ring as well as 3 others at my jeweler. Today somehow I managed to lost one on melee on the side. It needs some works: two girdles chip that needs repoloshing, prongs need to retip, one melee needs replace, and size down sz5 which 1 size more my actual size. I notice my finger swell up during summer and golf season.

I ask the jeweler to weigh the stone when he unmounts the stone.

How exciting. I think once those girdle chips are removed your diamond will sparkle even more. We had one PS member who bought an OEC with a girdle chip and it looked like the chip was reflected in the diamond. She had the chip removed and the diamond looked amazing. If I remember right the weight loss was pretty insignificant. I can't wait to see the ring and diamond when it is finished.

I got a quote back from my jeweler. He dismantled and weighed the stone as 1.37 ct. He says once repolish or recut, it will look more like a cushion cut. He suggests I like to keep it for myself, then polish, if i like to see it, make it would be a good idea to have it recut to a cushion.

1)Retip, reset, and replace missing meelee $224.
2)Polising the chipped girdle will lost 0.01-0.02 points. It cost $85
3)Recut which it will lost 0.10-.15ct. And it clost $345 plus tax (10%).

I just call the jeweler and decided to polish the stone. I want to leave it the way for now. Hopefully, I will get it back end of next week.

This is the 5th ering that I will be alternating. I don't know if i will be selling it. I am hoarding because i want to pass down to my daughter and two future daughter-in-law.

Do you by any chance know the thread for the pser?

I couldn't recut the stone. I'd hurt my own heart in the process. A nice polishing up of the girdle and strong setting... you're good to go! I've got a couple of old wonkies I inherited. I could never recut them. Heck.. a couple I can't even bear to reset since the settings are original.

As I was on the call with the jeweler, i decided to polish up the stone instead of recutting.

Do you have any that you polishing before/after pic?

Thanks for the link! Wowza! What a amazing turn out! This is really make me rethink about the ring with two stones ( both stone st 1.25ct per stone) both have chip on the girdle, one is bigger than the other that i saw for sell. Perhaps if the seller wiggle the price to $2000.

Mine is just a polishing but I cannot wait to see how it turn out.

No.. back in the 70's it would never have entered our minds to take before and after pictures of our diamonds. We just made sure our stones matched our plottings. Caught a leading New England jeweler attempting a switcheroo while having a 1.76 reset.

Jeweler contacted and said all jobs are complete and ready to be picked up. One is the message is that after the repolishing, the stone still weigh 1.37ct . The loss was so small that the scale couldn’t detect it.

I will pick it up tomorrow. Can’t wait!

Eek! So excited for you! And happy to hear that the weight loss was negligible.
