I'm currently looking at erings for my gf. The earliest I will buy the ring will be mid-march, because I'm waiting on my annual bonus. She is in love w/ a particular Tacori setting. From my understanding, Tacori has set prices, except for certain exclusions. The setting that I'm looking at is $4k for the platinum setting and about $3k for white gold. My original thought was to purchase a white gold setting, but there is a jeweler who is having an inventory clearance and they have this particular setting (platinum) for $2k. If it's a good idea, I have the money set aside to go ahead and purchase the setting now, and I can get the diamond after bonus season. That way I'll have an extra $1k to spend on the diamond. What do you think?

*I'm not 100% sure it's the exact setting, because I believe tacori has different versions depending on the size of the center stone. I can call to check on that, but I felt a little more comfortable asking for the ps members opinion before I contacted the jeweler and got their input.

Thanks!

What shape and size? You need to know what millimeter size the head will hold, and then find a stone that will fit. Round will be easier than a cushion / square shape to find the right measurements.

I'm not sure exactly which stone I'll end up purchasing. Right now I'm looking at POH, Brellia, BGD Sig Cushion, and modern cushion. I want the stone size to be anywhere from 1-1.25 ct depending on what's available (ideally I'll find a nice diamond at a reasonable price around 1.2-1.25 ct).

Pendinge the actual setting you will be limited to what can fit into it. Which is why you usually buy the diamond first. That way you can order the setting in the correct size and/ or have it custom fited. Call and ask the jewelry what size stone mm wise and what shape can fit onto the head and if there is wiggle room.

Thanks for the input. I'll talk to the jeweler, but it looks like I'll be constrained especially since I'm not purchasing a round stone.

Thanks again

I would strongly encourage not to purchase a stock setting. IIRC Tacori makes the setting to fit the diamond and the wearers ring size. By purchasing a stock setting you will likely need the jeweler to re-size the ring and set the diamond thus voiding any warranty from Tacori, a big NO in my book! I would suggest contacting Tacori and confirming that will continue to warranty the stock setting in such a case, and I would get their commitment in writing. If they refuse then I would wait until you can buy both the diamond and the setting at the same time.
