I''m looking to get diamond studs mounted in platinum (3-prong) due to problems with metal. I''m considering lower colored stones (J-K color) to get larger diamonds at better price. I know with something like a ring you might not want to mount a stone this color in white gold or platinum. But with studs, you''d mostly just see the tip of the prongs. So would it be OK? Or do I need to look for whiter stones with platinum?

I say go for it!

Lots of people here have J or K stones set in platinum! I see zero issues with studs in any event. The key, though, is that ideal cut stones do not show color from the face-up view like less well cut stones do. So as long as you intend to get ideal J or K, you should be fine! (I''d personally be more comfortable with J, though.)

Thanks...do you think there is a visible difference between J and K? I was looking at a potential pair on James Allen site. One was J and the other K. The SA said probably wouldn''t be a problem with earrings as they are not right next to eachother. He said if I was inerested in the stones, they could have their people look at them and tell me if it seemed like it would be a problem.

I have a J colored ering center stone and it was set in platinum for 4 years. The stone never looked clashy or more yellow in the platinum. I never felt like it looked yellow at all. In some photos I took it would show a hint of warmth (depending on the background and the lighting) but when you look at it face to face, its never looked yellow at all. I don''t think you will have any problems.

You should be fine setting those grades in WG or plat, many here have done so with great results! As to the J and K, they should be fine, but let the folks at JA be your guide.

I''d go for it. I have an I set in platinum and it looks really white.

Thank you all. It was the guy at JA who raised the issue that setting in platinum might not be best with J-K color stones. But he did say I could try it and send back if I didn''t like.
