I can''t afford much more then this, is this website reputable? http://www.danforthdiamond.com/
I know they use IGI grading, should I worry about that? Here''s the diamond I''m looking at, it''s the one on the bottom for $778. Marquise shape. thanks

I could be wrong, but are they using the same system as blue nile? That toolbar looks identical.

First do you know what you are looking at ?
Do you know anything about these people your sending money too?
Anybody can be anything on the internet.

About your marquise , they dont give measurements but only lenght to width ratios

Here is the problem with only half the equation.

Example a 2 to 1 ratio is ideal for a marquise cut diamond.

would you want a 1 carat that measured 10 x 5 mm (2 to 1 ratio)

Or

would you want a 1 carat that measured 8 x 4 mm (2 to 1 ratio)

They both weigh 1.00 carat, but one looks like a .50 carat from the top.

Dont pick any diamond from a list your letting price control what your really getting.

Remmeber a diamond is forever and so is ugly.

Why not use the pricescope tool to narrow down your search and then ask people on here about your choice?

Are you on a budget? Are you looking specifically for a marquise or would you consider other shapes? What sort of mounting are you thinking about buying?

I know the basics, I''ve read numerous ''how to'' guides or whatever.
I don''t know much about the company, searched on here for them and not much came up.

I am on a budget, $1,500 max. She told me she doesn''t want round for sure. Pear, Oval, Marquise would all be fine. I personally like the Marquise. Mounting would have side stones. She liked this mounting, it was from the same website.

I''ll look into the pricescope, thanks.

I personally wouldn''t get an IGI graded stone. How about this one from dirtcheapdiamonds.com

Thanks, looks good, I''ll look at that website more.

CAVEAT: I''m no expert...

Have you read the tutorial on this site? If not, that''d be the first stop...click knowledge in the tool bar at the top. Take a bit of your time and read through the tutorial. That will give you an idea of the importance of cut to your decision, and it''s effect on how your diamond will perform. I hope someone a bit more experienced jumps in here, but I think you''ll want to see the diamond for yourself to assess how well it will perform before you plunk your cash down for good, since fancy shapes can be finnicky.

Having said all that...if you like the diamond and it speaks to you, then go for it. But, if you want opinions, most everyone will recommend you become more informed on cut (and this shape in general, if this is your final decision) before you pull the trigger.

Thanks, I''ll read thru it tonight. Briefly looking at it here at work it looks like it goes into more detail then most.
I am leaning towards buying online, Cook County''s(Chicago''s)sales tax is killer. I may go down to Jeweler''s Row in town to look around this weekend.
All this can be very overwhelming

mcnabb,

How about this pear, from James Allen (www.jamesallen.com)? James Allen has a pretty nice reputation here at PS

I like their selection of diamonds, thanks. Not sure about the settings though, I emailed a pic of one I liked to the misses, I''ll see what she says.

Thanks!

Absolutely! For some reason I messed up the link to the pear, so here it is in case you''re interested:

Or here, for easy clicking

This website is confusing

Whoops! Sorry. I was trying to post a pic of the pear in the engraved setting. It looks really pretty. I just kept getting the pear alone or the setting alone.

I meant this website. Last two posts I made on here weren''t showing up when I went back to the thread, o well.

anywho, GF wrote back saying:

I like, it''s really pretty, but I still like the one from yesterday better ;-)

The one from yesterday is the setting I posted in here earlier. So we''ll see, I really want to order the diamond/setting together, too much of a PITA otherwise not too mention more $.
What are some other websites that PS generally approves of?

thanks

Keep in mind, you don't have to buy the setting and diamond at the same place. It can make things easier but I wouldn't force myself to choose a diamond from the vendor that has the setting you want. The person who sells you the diamond should, in most cases, be able to put the two together for you.

Try also:

http://www.whiteflash.com/

http://www.goodoldgold.com/

Both can make any setting you want as a custom job. It is often more affordable than you may have thought.
