We have no family treasures. Well very few. I have a vintage sterling charm bracelet from the 50s and a citrine bracelet from the 40s. My mother has from her grandmother a vase and cloth from Russia. And my grandfather has an oscar that he won in 1978.

Some appraisers will charge by the hour so maybe you ca fit few things in. Where do you live? Here in San francisco we have an auction house that does free appraisals with no pressure to sell. It''s called Butterfields.

I''m in Denver. And not to change the topic of my own thread but.......an Oscar?!?!

It''s likely real. Sounds like they hid them away for safe keeping. I guess the ruby could be synthetic , the pearls are probably real and natural ( maybe river pearls) . Because in 1881 I don''t think they had cultured pearls yet. At least not commercially. It could also be a garnet. I guess you''ll know more soon. Maybe it''ll be a mine cut diamond!! That would be so cool.
They didn''t have cultured pearls then, but simulated pearls have been around for a very long time - In the 17th Century they were making glass balls coated with a varnish made of pearly fish scales and filled with wax - this technique was the main method of faux pearl production for several hundred years. Seed pearls would be the most likely though.

Verneuil method synthetic rubies and sapphires were also around in the 1880''s and were highly prized - they are often found set in gold or platinum settings. I have a few of the early ones and they are gorgeous (sadly far too good to be true!)

Well worth having them checked out by an appraiser! Exciting find - I bet you''re dying to have a look yourself!

Even if they are synthetic or not, just being antiques is a great find. Antique jewellery has a look and design that is very costly to replicate. And 5 pocket watches? I''m in dreamland.

Please posts those too.

Well...what''s happening? ;-)

lol!!! My parents were so excited about everything. (It was hilarous. Trying to explain the ''supposed'' diamond to me...So funny..lol) There were also incredibly old coins. She did mention papers and different things but I don''t know if any of it belongs to the jewelry. The ruby ring with pearls was marked 1881..

OH! I ALMOST FORGOT!!!!! She said there are 5 (I think) pocket watches too...
