Who Oh Harriet...

Heya sweetie, just wanted to pop in and say hello!
35.gif

I am glad you had a good Thanksgiving in Michigan! Last Sunday (not yesterday, but a week ago), I did a little Thanksgiving meal for James and I and it was pretty fabulous! Made me not feel so sad to have missed my family gathering. I was rather proud of myself with it, I must say.

How much of your holiday shopping have you gotten done so far? I''ve been terrible and have barely done any...

Hello darlin'',
35.gif

What did you make? Did James like it? You''re coming home soon, aren''t you? I''ll get to meet you, won''t I? I ask too many questions, don''t I?

I''m in the same boat as you.

Who''s cooking? My friend had me slice olives over the weekend and I ran away.

Heehee! Thanks, honey, I really needed a chuckle today.
5.gif

Let me see...I served some appetizers to James (it was just the two of us but I wanted it to feel special!) and then put out the main stuff--a turkey would''ve been too big for just us, so I made a small chicken and it was the perfect size, and nice and juicy! I also made spinach salad with homemade dressing, glazed carrots, stuffing with cranberries and sausage (yum!), mashed potatoes, roast potatoes (J loves taters), and gravy. For dessert we had warm cherry pie with ice cream. It was lovely, although a bit basic (to make sure I didn''t mess anything up). Mmmmm.
18.gif

As for when I''m coming home, I wish I knew. I''m hoping to go home in April for a few weeks, to visit my grandfather who''s got Alzheimer''s, sinceI haven''t seen him for a while. If I make a trip up to your area (which I might since I have friends near you
2.gif
), I think it''d be lovely to meet up!

Hehe, yeah, most of the time I just don''t want to think about Christmas gifts, and then I remember that there''s kind of a time limit...

Oh no, what''s wrong?

Wow! You cooked up quite a feast.

I had a good day. I hung out with a pal and ate. And ate. And ate.

Oh, it''s nothing really, just a stressful day at work. The drama teacher and I have been preparing the students at the school where I teach (a special needs high school) for over a month to do this Christmas production: a mix of singing, dancing, acting, homemade movies and a fashion show. He''s a bit of a slacker, so there were many times when he left me in the lurch to handle everything myself (it''s my first year at this school). Anyway, he didn''t show up to work yesterday, I was left to do it all myself, and got no thanks or credit for any of my work (either yesterday or the month + of work beforehand). A substitute teacher (who''s been around for a few days) who does drama and helped out a bit was told half a dozen times that the school "couldn''t have done it without him" and that he''s "totally and completely brilliant" and "a lifesaver" by the school administrators. I was thanked as an afterthought every time: "...oh yes, and thanks to Ms. S too." Literally. Arg, so frustrating.

But the show is over now! Today was the second and last day of it. So I''m ok.
9.gif

Ooh, did you go out for food with your friend? What''d you have? You know I love your taste in food...
31.gif

That is frustrating. At least it wasn''t anything serious, right?

See? That''s why we need to meet and eat. We started off with brunch. I had buttermilk waffles with creme fraiche and berry compote. For lunch, I had a roast beef and horseradish tartine. For tea, we shared a molten chocolate cake containing both milk and white chocolate. And ... I bought a ... Smurfette tee!

Oh, can I eat with you too?? Yummo!!

I want to see the tee! Smurf out!

I might be in LA in the spring. Can we go chomping?

The tee is kindof figure hugging. I may return it.

I want to see the Smurfette tee, too! LOL, I loved the smurfs. I had so many plastic figurines.

Oooooh....that sounds absolutely divine! We definitely need to meet up for lunch one day. Mmmm...

Thanks for being such a kind friend, lending your ear to me earlier. Today was much better, and it''s the weekend now! So I''m feeling lots better, and wanted to say thanks since you helped with that.

Anytime, dearie.

Today was good. Swimming, wandering around 47th St., tea with a pal, dinner with the hubs. My weekend should be quiet though. What do you have planned, if anything?

Oooh, swimming! I am quite envious! Swimming is one of my most favourite things! Sounds like a wonderful day.

My weekend is going to be relatively quiet as well. I went out this afternoon to do a bit of shopping (just groceries, nothing fun, alas) and tomorrow am going to spend the day with James. He so enjoyed the Thanksgiving meal I made that he asked if I''d make another similar meal tomorrow, so I have some yummy stuff ready for that. We''re also going to try to finish putting together our kitchen table together (we''ve had some trouble with our tools). So, nothing glam, but that''s my life.
2.gif

Are you going anywhere for the holiday, m''dear?

Thanks for the reminder. I have to sort out our holiday travel. The ILs are expecting us to go to MI again. Noo way. What about you and James?

We'll be staying with his parents from Christmas Eve to January 3rd. I enjoy spending time with his family, but that's going to be a long visit!

You were only just in Michigan for Thanksgiving, right? So it shouldn't be a big deal to them for you to be elsewhere for Christmas, will it?

That is a long time.

You''d think it wouldn''t be a big deal, but ... We''ve told them that we''re not going, but MIL is speaking as if we''ve said otherwise. Weird.

Are you making stuffing tomorrow? Yum.

From what I''ve read of your MIL, she seems to have...a certain quirkiness when it comes to communication and relationships. I hope she will accept that she''s mistaken graciously. Will you get to see some of your family members for Christmas or do you have other plans? (And stop me if I''m being too nosy!)

I will be making stuffing tomorrow! As well as carrots, parsnips & onions and some roast potatoes--and the chicken, of course.
1.gif

"Quirkiness" is one way to think about it.
2.gif
I hope so too, but I doubt it. Ah well, she''ll just have to accept our decision. Unfortunately, no, since my family is in Singapore. Nah, you''re never nosey, just a dear.

3.gif
Can you make trifle?

Oh, I can, actually! I should have put one together for dessert tonight--got so caught up in preparing the rest that I forgot about the afters! We have a couple of little odds and ends in the flat anyway, but nothing special. Drat!

If it''s not too personal a question, how difficult do you find living far away from your family? I keep trying to figure out if I''d be able to settle down in another country or if I will miss home too much. Some days it seems like it''d be fine, and other days, not so much. How did you decide you could do it?

haha The smurfs were very strange. Have you watched them as an adult? They''re positively avant-garde!

I had a lot of figurines too. I loved greedy and jokey. I always wanted to eat greedy''s cakes.

Who is your favorite smurf??

MIRANDA! I''m coming to Dana Point for the hols.

Ooh, I love trifle. How was dinner?

It''s not too personal at all. Do stop apologising. I''ve been away from my family for a while. I''m an only child and my parents are not very close to the extended family, so it hasn''t been too difficult. I chat with my mum and dad several times a week. I feel that we get along better with the distance. I didn''t make any conscious decision about a permanent move. Good luck with whatever decision you make and may it make you happy!

No way! You will be 10 minutes from me! We should meet for drinks at the Montage!

And yes, the Smurfs were a little strange. DD watched it recently. She kind of liked it. Gargamel freaked her out.

We must! There''s a possibility that we''ll go to Aviara instead. Is that still near you?

Gargamel scared me as a child. Heck, Papa Smurf did too.
