OEC: Worth polishing/faceting the girdle?

This is what you see in real life without macro photography from 8-10 inches away (can't get the picture to be the right size but the point is the same).

I totally hear you re in real life viewing. In fact I can't tell the nuances in some more modern OMC's as they come into OEC's and even OEC into tranny in real life. I have a 5.7mm tranny that, set against a 5mm OEC looks pretty much almost the same in terms of sparkle. It's just a bling blang kind of look. The macro definitely sets those details apart.

wow! Gorgeous. Enjoy!

Thanks, Dreamer! I didn't realize it reduced picture sizes to the left of the blog box.

It a beauty, Dreamer! Especially satisfying that it was a steal too. I wouldn't touch it, it's not at all noticeable.
I have a question you might be able to answer and it runs along the lines of your question.
When it comes to polishing/faceting the girdle, is there any insurance available against it shattering? Either with the cutter or personal insurance. I was of the understanding that stones are never covered by the cutter's insurance and there are no insurance companies who'll insure a stone for loss during cutting. Do you know if that's true?
I found a great OEC but it's bezel set and it's at too good of a price so I'm thinking there may be a chip(s) to the girdle. The jeweler set it and they are reputable, he assures me the girdle is not damaged but I am skeptical. Either way I would send it to Dave to look at unmounted. Even if it needs a recut its a great price. But I don't know if I want to risk the $30,000 to recut it if I run the risk of loosing both the stone and my SO's money if it were to shatter.

MF I don't know a tonne about that! I only know of two places where PSers have had recuts is BGD and Singlestone. I don't know about insurance through BGD but I am thinking you cannot get it though them. I do remember reading in Sparkly OEC's thread that singlestone offers insurance for 1% of the stone's value, though, which is very fair (I think it was 1%, maybe it was 2%, read her thread).

And now please SPILL the details on your find?

What a beautiful find! You have quite the eye DD.

MF - SPILL! And don't quote me but I think that my Chubb policy mentioned something about covering/insuring unset stones. If you're interested I can give you my agent's information - are you in the US though? Right now I have general and itemized coverage with Chubb.

Thanks Dreamer! That's fair, I'd be willing to chance it at SS then.
I don't want to say too much because I don't want anyone to swoop it by doing a search or recognizing the pictures (it's amazing how good we all are at recognizing vendor's pic styles!) but it's a VS1 J color OEC and it measures just over 11mm. Hence I'm really twitchy about the price because it doesn't make sense to be so low.
The other hesitation is that it means the VC setting I have would not work because it's not big enough and it'll mean I have a $6,000+ setting that I can't use for an e-ring and it's a lot for a RHR+ I'd need more funds for another stone of some kind (and I don't think it'll suit a colored stone) to put in it. We just have to save just a little a bit more also.
But if this is as good as it looks/sounds then it's hard to pass up....oy vey :errrr:
If someone else swoops it in the mean time then it wasn't meant to be, I'll search for something else. I was kind of hoping the Rhino would get in a suitable size AVR to fit the setting, Charles is keeping me up to date with new stock coming up. But this big old pretty thing keeps popping into my mind :naughty:
Ok I don't want to thread jack your post, Dreamer, I'll keep you updated - thanks for the help :wavey:

Hi winternight, as I posted the details to above, it's something I found from a vendor and I'm just weighing the pros and cons. Seems odd to me that they would bezel set it and price it so low for the specs they have given it. It's not like they don't have an inventory of old cuts, albeit all set also, but their other old cuts seem priced more 'normally'. They have been in business a long time and seem to have a good reputation, so....Maybe I'm just suspicious of the bezel - bezels hide things, they seem taken aback that I want it unset but seem happy to do so, though they won't split the ring from the stone, I have to buy both, so if I got it I'd just sell the setting.

If I definitely decide not to get it I'll share the link :)

Dreamer, I love the 2 stones together. And, wow, the seller's pics are definitely not attractive. It's a good thing you're so good at this!

Maplefemme: SS will insure the stone for 5-8% of what you paid for it while it's with them. Totally worth it IMHO. Dreamer, sorry for the threadjack. ::)

Good lord Dreamer, that thing is a STUNNER - love love love the faceting!!

Oh, you know I've got my fingers crossed for twins :appl: At the rate you're going that should be, oh, another month or two?  And if you do decide to save it for an earring I definitely wouldn't touch it, so maybe hold off on that decision until you've decided one way or another...

Interesting to hear your thoughts on how differently they behave IRL - there are definitely some differences in faceting in your photos but it always surprises me how much change in personality even small differences can make - and sometimes just the opposite!

Seriously. Next time I'm looking for an old cut your inbox will be the first to know, you're a pro!!

ETA: my browser often just cuts off text/photos behind the blog box - I have to copy the text and paste it into notepad to actually read it, so I am always glad when OP is empty and long enough to get below! I use some combo of firefox/chrome/ie - I think Chrome might be the troublemaker...

What MF??? You're thinking of trading in your VC ring?? After all you went through to figure out how to set the stone??? Of course, 11mm of OEC deliciousness at a great price would be hard to turn down! :naughty:

I'm amazed at all of you who manage to find OECs that work together for earrings or rings. I've been looking for an oec to match the one that Ari has and it's proving to be really difficult. Everything is either too small, too big, the wrong color or waaayyy too expensive. Arrrgghhh! Seriously, when ya'll are done shopping for yourselves, can you find a 5.4x5.8mm G color OEC at a steal for me????

Shipping plus polishing w/ Ari or BGD will cost almost what you paid, so no, I wouldn't do it. You paid a great price and you dont want to add cost to it if you dont have to! Those little bites wont bother me at all in earrings.
if this is the case then I wouldn't do it.

Can't wait i see what you do DD!!!

Oh no, Yenny, I'll keep the VC no matter what. It's really beautiful, VC is holding on to it for safe keeping until I find an OEC to put in it. I don't trust anyone up here to set it because I asked VC to do über delicate double claws and I'd be upset if someone up here wrecked them in the resetting process, we don't have any benches in Calgary that I'd put much faith in.
It's just that I found this other OEC whilst searching and it's so hard to pass up. I'd set it in something very clean lined though, no pave.
We don't have up to $30,000 just yet or else I'd have likely pursued it already, blessing and a curse really.
I dipped into the funds to buy a pair of antique earrings, I should have more self control, but they called to me!
I found another pair last night, East West oval rose cuts, they are INSANELY gorgeous, total perfection....but...must...resist, focus woman, focus!

I'll keep an eye out for that G OEC, Yenny ;))

There are so many stones that size on ebay! It is really a common size IMO. They seem to sell for around $800 to $1200 depending on the mount and how obvious the listing is. The G color is your problem. I would sell it and start over myself. You can call Ilya at DiamondZone from ebay. He seems to have plenty of loose stones and the prices are fair -- higher than ebay steals but much lower than retail. But you won't find another for the price you paid for this one.

Sure, bright ice, it's very much like ringabling's LM reset. If you scroll down page one to her pic of her ring on the red LM box, it looks just like that, but with single cuts throughout, with minuscule rose cuts at the base of the tapered struts, near the donut (but not on the donut) and a surprise diamond under the donut. The centre stone was 8.62mm

Thanks bright ice! It was disappointing but I figure everything happens for a reason, my stone's out there somewhere, waiting!
Have a nice weekend :wavey:

DD, very interesting about macro vs. real life. Honestly, I have pretty bad eyesight in real life so macro does nothing for me! I'm also happy to not be looking for macro perfection or I'd probably never buy anything.

MF, ditto, the setting sounds amazing and I hope you find a stone soon. Am I wrong that a stone that would fit into the VC setting would be less expensive than the one you're looking at? Honey, can I just say I think you should find a stone that size and get your engagement ring set so that you can enjoy it? I really, really hope you don't mind me saying so. I'm sure that setting is just gorgeous, not need to put so much pressure on an engagement ring. There will be plenty of time for other rings later. Believe me, I'm looking around for a ring to celebrate having a little baby girl. PS I just bought some earrings that were not on my list of items to get so I understand when something calls you! I hope you post pics!

Not at all winternight, I am always appreciative to other's opinions and thoughts and I do agree, I should wait to find a stone to fit the VC setting. It's just that a large diamond purchase will likely only be a one time thing for us and a 2.70-3.0ct is the average size that would fit the setting, as OECs vary so much in spread, and in the color and eye clean I'm looking for its only a couple thousand difference between their prices and this 5+ct so it's awfully tempting to go with the larger size. A 5ct would never normally be in the budget.
But size isn't everything, and with a little more saving to do, fate will steer us one way or another. I'm just happy to have such a great guy, the ring is the cherry on top, so whatever we get I'll be thrilled and fortunate!

Congratulations on your baby girl! :)
