Is it common for the pavilion to be unpolished on an oec?

Not sure? Bumping this post with hopes that the experts will chime in. I have an OEC and the pavilion is polished. Good luck, hope you find your answer!

Do you mean the girdle?

HI jaaron,
It does sound like you have your terms confused. ringo is correct. Always listen to ringo, you can never go wrong:) (Beatles fan)
The pavilion facets are on the bottom of the diamond, never left unpolished- while the girdle on true antique stones is generally ""bruted". This type of girdle looks something like textured foggy glass, and is not considered polished.

Sorry for being unclear.

No, I mean the pavilion. I'm considering an oec that's currently set in a ring where you can see a bit of the pavilion and it looks, not exactly unpolished, but almost sort of matte. I know it wasn't dirt because they steam cleaned it while I was there. Actually, Rockdiamond, your description of foggy glass is spot on, but it's definitely the pavilion, not the girdle, which you can't see in the setting.

It's a nice stone at a great price--really nice faceting--but I was wondering if having that part polished up might make it perform even better?

The pavilions of my mrbs don't look like that, and my oec ring is being repaired (bad idea to catch the head of an Emilya on a supermarket shelf!), so I have nothing to check it against.

Thanks for the replies- I really appreciate the width and breadth of knowledge here!

If it's dirt from the 1900s, it may come off only after a l o n g soak. Ask if the seller would try soaking it in like Dawn dish soap overnight and scrubbing with a soft brush.

if it's not dirt, then you will have to consider whether to pay for it to be polished--which may or may not take you over your budget. Not sure how much a repolish costs.

I personally would love to see a picture.

More information is needed. Possibilities include dirt or damage, a natural blemish, inclusion or even fundamental crystal-growth which prevented a facet or several facets from running properly on the wheel. Do you have a grading report?

R-I-N-G-O!!!!!

Sounds like dirt.
The likelihood of a cutter leaving an entire pavilion facet unpolished is so very tiny.
I've never seen such an example...small areas on the pavilion called "Naturals", yes. But an entire pavilion facet that reaches the culet....I've never seen it

ROCKDIAMOND!! (I wear rings and hubby is a drummer)

Hastings: I still want to see pics :). Lots of vendors will allow it. I do it all the time. Drool - (then make them my lock-screen pic)
