I''m an RN and I work in Labor and Delivery. I''ve done it for 11 years and no night is ever the same

You have my dream job! I''m currently in my Peds/OB semester of nursing school and am having troubles deciding between Mother Baby and L&D.. I think my problem right now is that L&D slightly intimidates me, but I think it''s what I really really want to do.. Any advice!? lol

I say go for L&D but I''m biased
2.gif

I started off in L&D right out of nursing school since there was an internship. Originally I wanted to do NICU but there was no internship at the time- now I can''t imagine doing NICU! I floated to Mother/baby while I was working at a hospital in Maine. It''s far from my favorite thing to do but it''s tolerable. I just find L&D exciting and get bored with M/B. Now I''m back to just labor again and it''s great. Oh, and I *despise* peds! I could never do it and I have 2 kids!

And yes, L&D can be intimidating. But it''s so fun (except for the bad days) and every shift is different! Feel free to email me if I can answer any questions for you!

Thank you so much for your advice/insight. I think I am going to stick with L&D. It has always been my passion and I don''t want to let the intimidation get the best of me!

I am currently a student. FI is a software engineer. Weee..right now I am studying Foreign Affairs and history. I was going to be a Japanese major, buuut didn''t work out like I planned because I transferred schools and my course placement got screwed up. I am thinking about law school, did anyone go or is anyone going? If you did or are going any advice on how to pay for it? I''d love to talk to you, always looking for advice about law school.

ETA: Sorry for kind of thread-jacking!

I went to law school but didn''t finish, here''s my advice on how to pay: Don''t go unless you get a full ride, which is what I did and I''m so grateful because then I didn''t feel stuck staying there when I realized it wasn''t for me.

I''m a high school English teacher, and I love it, but the truth is I really just want to be a student forever. I''m also a reading specialist, so I teach lit and reading. FI is a muscle specialist, he has a master''s in OT and then specialized. We both love our jobs very much.

Good point, that is one of my concerns! Honestly, the school I am at is kind of competitive and sometimes I feel burned out already, so I wonder what law school would be like for me. I really want to help people, and I really love learning about the law. I thought about maybe becoming a teacher also. I was thinking about teaching ESL. Anyway, thanks for the advice!

I will be starting law school next year. The whole application process is pretty crazy, but I''m really looking forward to beginning. One good resource I have found is www.lawschooldiscussion.org -- They have message boards for pre-law students and actual law students. However, if you get on there and start reading about people''s LSAT scores and stuff, your perception may be skewed -- it seems like everyone on that board scored 170+, even though in reality that is like a 99th percentile score. I think part of it is probably just that people lie about those things online, no one wants to admit they scored like a 132 or something. On that board, my LSAT score sounds awful -- but actually, it was good enough to get me into T25 schools. Anyway, if you want to chat any about law school or whatever you can send me a PM. Good luck!

freke i was a psychology major too for awhile

have you taken any statistics classes yet? cuz thats when i changed my majors lol

I''m taking Stats right now actually. The key with me taking Stats is that my BF is a Sociology Stats instructor, and until very recently was considering getting a second Masters in it, because he wants to finish his PhD faster. He was already done with about 3/4 of the coursework too.
20.gif
Plus he used to tutor stats and math at the campus tutoring center, so I basically have my own Stats tutor. It''s funny because he just got done helping me with my stats homework.

But I concur, Statistics sucks.

I''m currently a grad student, but normally I''m a teacher. I''ve taught various instrumental music groups of students aged 5-40 for 10 years, and have worked in special education for 2 years (overlapping the music years). My master''s degree will be in special ed, and my bachelor''s was in music ed.
1.gif

I assume you play music as well--what instrument(s)? I''m a keyboard player (started off playing classical piano for around 15 years, but now I do mostly jazz & rock) and a vocalist (both jazz and classical--I''m a mezzo soprano).

I was a double major in college--psychology and theatre. Job-wise, I worked in animation for a year out of college (for the tv show American Dad on Fox), but I''ve been doing marketing and business development since then. I''m still trying to figure out what I want to do for a career. Lately I''ve actually been considering professional organization (yes, I really am that anal-retentive about stuff like that). A company I was doing some freelance marketing work for is currently having me reorganize their entire office, and I''m actually really enjoying it. I''ve also thought about something involving writing or editing since I used to edit theses and term papers in college, but editing gigs don''t tend to pay much.
7.gif

Right now is a bit transitional since we''re trying to move 1000 miles away in the next 6 months. Can''t really get a career when I''m about to move! In the meantime, I''m freelancing and doing some temp work to help make ends meet.

Haha, that''s funny! I HATE every kind of math there is, but when I took Statistics last year, I actually loved it. Weird. I had a really great professor, though.

Everyone has such interesting jobs.

Right now I''m currently a Nursing Assistant because I THOUGHT I wanted to go to nursing school. I changed my mind. While the job can be rewarding, the nursing field just isn''t for me. I''m currently applying to dental hygiene schools, so hopefully I''ll get in for Fall ''08. I can''t wait.

Let's see, I started playing piano when I was 7, so that means I've been playing for about 23 years (
23.gif
am so old!!). I played the oboe for about 8 years (started that when I was about 10 but didn't pursue it in college), and started playing percussion (which is my main instrument) when I was 14, so I've been playing that for 16 years now. My first 2 years of college I was a piano major, but it wasn't a lot of fun--I had WAY more fun doing percussion, but didn't think I could swing it as my major because I'd never had private lessons in it. But it turns out I was still accepted as a percussion major, so I dropped piano (officially) and graduated with a concentration in percussion (favourite instruments being the marimba and the tympani). For my music degree, I had to learn how to play everything though--a year of brass, a year of strings, a year of woodwinds, a year of percussion, a semester of guitar. At some point I want to get a cello and teach myself that because I love the sound. Oh, and I sing--started that when I was 16, am also a mezzo.

I''m dying to learn cello, too! I''ve been saying that once my kids were both in school (this fall!) I''d take cello lessons! I played violin for several years in elemtary/middle school. I quit when we moved and my school didn''t have orchestra- so I moved to "sideline" percussion in marching band. I loved the marimba! Such a cool sound!
Anyway, you''ve got me excited about the cello again

Yay! We''ll have to do some recordings and post them here on PS to do recitals for each other!!

....of course, you might have to wait 5 or 10 years for me to get there, but when we have our cellos, we should totally do that.

i''m in grad school studying to be a speech language pathologist. when i''m done next year i want to work with severely language impaired kids and adults (developmental/autism, tbi, and stroke patients). I''m really interested in the neuroscience of it and would like to get into electronic brain stimulation, but it hasn''t caught on at enough hospitals yet to make it feasible just yet. hopefully one day though! as of right now i''d like to get my phD after working a few years to do more research, but that might change. FI is a software engineer

Hahahahahaha! I played violin as a child (from when I was 4 until I was allowed to quit at 10) and I was baaaaaaaaad at it. Beyond bad. That''s the truly sad part: I can read music and have near-perfect pitch....but I could not play the violin to save my life. I don''t know what my problem is. I know the notes and where they are on the neck. I can read the notes. But some disconnect exists between the fingers and the brain and what results sounds like....a dying cow.

I''m a print model but I''ve done some filmed spots too...actually, I''m a mostly-retired model at my age (33). I''ve been finishing school these last, s-l-o-w-e-s-t years of my erstwhile career, finally earning my Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing (betcha didn''t know I was actually TRAINED to write, judging from my dopey posts).

Hmmm, now that I think of it, can we throw in "landlord," too? The idea of selling my condo in a lousy market when FI & I moved into a new (bigger, for the doggie and kitty) place broke my heart, so I kept the sucker and rented it out.

Yaaaaaay

Another nurse, here! I''ve been a nurse for 5 years. I started out in NICU an FELL IN LOVE! I was at a Level 3 NICU in Chicago for 2 years before I realized I have always been an Iowa girl at heart and needed to leave the city. I came back home to NE Iowa and for the past 3 years I''ve been at a hospital small enough that I do NICU (Level 2), L&D and Mother/Baby. I still would rather take care of a preemie anyday than be knee high in lochia, placenta, and aminotic fluid....but I love my little area of nursing and can''t imagine doing anything outside of OB/NICU! I think if you get really good training right out of nursing school, you''ll love that area and it probably will be your area of choice. I don''t believe in the old view that you should spend "at least a year in Med/Surg before you do something more specialized." If I had to do Med/Surg, I might not be a nurse at all! But that''s just me....

Fun/scary note... I just delivered my first baby without a doctor present last night! It certainly wasn''t intentional...but things turned out okay.

^^^^I totally agree with this! And I would definitely not be a nurse if I had to do med/surg first ***gag*** I don't like sick people! I love taking care of high risk/sick moms but that's the limit! And I'd rather be knee high in amniotic fluid and other goo than take care of a 24 week baby

Way to go on the delivery! That's my favorite part though it's been months since I've done a precip

My degree is a BS in Information Management and Technology. However, after school I worked as a business consultant for awhile and then moved over to Pharma sales. Just recently I moved over to Medical Device Sales and now I work in the OR. For the record, I loved statistics in college. I actually find it to be quite usefull as it pertains to my job.

First of all, I love snow and wish we had more of it.

Secondly, how do you like food science? What exactly do you guys do? I''ve always been interested in it. If I had my way I''d probably drop Psych and major in Nutrition and get a second degree in Food Science.

And I want to state for the record that no matter how much I complain about Stats, I still prefer it a million times over algebra. I HATE Algebra. Letters and numbers do NOT go together in my head.

I''ve been in the room for plenty of precips, but never actually been the labor nurse at the time! It was a rush, that''s for sure.

I''m always soooo glad there are people that would rather do labor and people that would rather do NICU...it makes for a great blend.

I enjoy it. I''ve always enjoyed cooking and baking, but didn''t want the life of a chef. I also love science...so it''s a good fit. Basically, we do research to attempt to figure out what consumers want (how to make current products better, what new products they''d like, etc), we then figure out how to make that food manufacturable and "survive" on the shelf (that''s the science part), and create procedures for the plants to follow.

I went to Clemson and the major is Food Science & Human Nutrition....you then emphasize in one or the other. Over half of my class was nutrition, so I have several friends that are Registered Dieticians now. I personally think it could be fun to be in regulatory for a food company....you keep up with the latest claims that are allowed to be made by the FDA and USDA.

Sorry about that... I am new here and just said to send me a PM because I just assumed all forums allowed them. My bad... well, I guess if you have any more questions, you can just post them here! LOL
