Hi Everyone:

I tried to make an appointment with one of the appraisers on the pricescope list and they gave me a quote for an appraisal that sounds quite high ($290). While it includes everything ie: a diamond grading report, mounting analysis, photos, descriptions, valuations and documentation for insurance it seems a bit high for me. Is this what an appraisal for a ring usually costs?

Thanks
Evelyn

Hi Mrsg730, welcome...

You might want to check this topic: Appraisers especially...help to create the Pricescope Checklist

If all you need is to verify that the diamond matches its grading report and have an appraisal for insurance, you probably don't have to do all the extra analysis.

Whatever you'll decide please post about your experience...

Some additional ideas here...

If you consider getting Chubb Insurance, you only need a basic description of the ring, and a grading report.

This is because they do not replace the item, they pay you cash if you have a loss.

If you need a gemological verification analysis, and a range for what comparable items sell for, that is different than an insurance valuation.

The fee of $ 290.00 if you''re getting really comprehensive additional testing, i.e. PGS analysis, Sarin reports in full, Brilliance Scope, and more, plus a really comprehensive report written for replacement insurance coverage may not be outlandish at all. If you in a major city such as LA, or NY, where overheads are high, probably this is fairly commonplace for a highly credendialed and equipped expert.

The problem for many consumers is to ascertain what credentials are really meaningful, and what services are required.
That is best "solved" by investing a little time to personally talk with each of your considered choices.

Appraise the Appraiser.

It''s probably not all that high for those New Yorkers. They''ve got all those exorbitant parking fees, commuter travel expenses, and hazard duty built in.

An expensive city.
