Not diamonds?

Hey guys, so if you guys might remember In my other post I had 2 diamonds given to me by my grandma that I was going to be putting into a 3 stone ring. Well I went to an appraiser today and after looking at them for 30 seconds and sizing them and weighing them he determined they were not diamonds.

His conclusions were based on the fact that they are 5 mm wide and 3 mm deep and weigh around 79-80 points when they should weigh about 40 points he said. I am just posting to see if you guys agree with this conclusion from those numbers.

He said he wouldnt be sure without running more tests on it but he said he was sure it was not a diamond. After looing at it close up it is also nicked up and the girdle is thicker on one side than the other.

BTW this was the keppie/kiger office that I had this done. My family is friends with them so I had the change to go into thier office and look at some diamonds.

I was under the impression anyone with experience could easily identify CZ.

What''s keppie/kiger office? You looked at diamonds they were selling? Or just ones they had?

I was looking at diamonds they were selling but they were not similar to the diamonds I had at all so they had no reason to tell me mine were fake because I was prepared to spend the same on a center.

All I know of them is that they are a diamond wholesaler and they do not do normal office visits.

He said its either a CZ or some other sort of imitation.

Regardless now I need to figure out what I want to do now.

I am sure he did but he just ran the numbers and he has other people in his office that do testing im assuming. He said the diamond didn''t look right at all and I assum I should trust him since apparently they are a prety big company with a long hitory, I just didn''t know much about them before going in.,

wholesalers+family friends does add up. I don't think wholesalers are going to be coming across a lot of fakes so they don't need a tester?

Keppie Kiger is an old established company.... They are an AGS supplier member for years. Very highly respected.

They were one of the few companies that cut ideal cut diamonds when the rest of the world poo pooed them.

I would expect they would positively know the difference between real diamond and imitaions.

But it is reasonable to expect that since they deal in diamonds and not imitations, that they would not know which imitation stone this was.

The carat weight being almost twice what the diamond weight should be is a very reliable procedure for separating. Particularly for CZ''s

Diamond testers are not all that reliable. In order for them to function properly the stone has to be squeaky clean, and you need to test both the crown and the pavilion facet in order to insure that you don''t have a doublet.

Also imitations with diamond coatings, can throw the thermal testers off as well.

So the procedure he used is reliable for determining that it was not a diamond.

From a practical standpoint, it would really serve much to test to see if the stones are one of the common imitations, as it would probably cost more than its worth.

Here I disagree with you. Wholesalers are increasing running into non-diamond stones "salted" into parcels of diamonds.

Now with HPHT and CVD synthetics, the practice is occuring more frequently. Happens more often with small stones....

There are other ways that are far more reliable than diamond testers that one can use.

But as careful as one may try to be it is possible for some of the synthetics or imitations to "slip through the cracks".

I can now confirm that these are crap and need to go back to picking a new setting for my diamonds.

I also need to determine where I am going to get this all done, either WF, Keppie or Isaac at DimendScaasi.
