Hi all,

So, I''m about to go ahead and pay for my diamond and new setting, and I''m trading in my old engagement ring which I didn''t like anymore (wanted to go from 3-stone to solitaire) plus the old jeweler didn''t do a good job and one of the diamonds was loose (but not able to fall out), and I can''t help but feel kind of guilty. I mean, I am totally excited about the new ring, but I''m a little sentimental and I''m sad to lose my original engagement ring. Although, one part of me feels better knowing the platinum setting the 3 stone was in is apparently worthless to the person I''m trading it with so I can keep the setting for memories...

but still, I''m wondering- is it pretty common to change the WHOLE ring?

It is far from uncommon to change the whole ring, so don't be upset. However, I have found few who get rid of the original for sentimental reasons. It seems sort of dumb to most guys, but women and men are indeed from different planets in some respects. I hope you find a closer attachment to the improved version and feel like it is something you can never get rid of even after you get a bigger one some day later on.

On PS, yes! In the real world? not so much

. At least no one I know has done it.

It really depends on the person. Some people would never do it, others change theirs all the time. Personally, I don''t think changing your wedding set has any reflection on the marriage. Enjoy your new set and don''t worry about it!

Not everyone does - it is just personal preference. If you want to and you are able to, why not?

What have you finally decided to get? Did the original jeweler agree to take your old ring in trade?

yup, he traded it. I paid much more for it, but it''s okay I accounted for the lower pricing of diamonds now, plus he has to make some money too.

so, I ended up getting a 1.53 Princess cut diamond. F color, SI2 clarity. The only thing bugging me is it''s a little rectangular if you look closely, but it was a good deal.

The setting was an amazing deal. I got it from Bailey Banks and Biddle because they''re closing their store down so most of their settings were 80% off. It was a Scott Kay with the surprise diamonds in Palladium. So hopefully it will look good in the end. I think once the diamond is in the setting, it doesn''t appear as rectangular?

The dimensions are about 6.81x6.46 or something of that nature.

thanks for the comments.

So glad you were able to work out an upgrade deal. We''ll be waiting for lots of pics!

Are you sure this won''t bug you over time? It sounds like you were not happy with your previous set, and now you are getting another diamond that you have nagging doubts about? Are you sure you don''t want to spend a little more and get something that feels perfect for you?

We haven''t even been married 3 years and I have already upgraded my stone from .76 to 2.04ct. I will also completely change the ering and wedding band. I love the ones I have but we got engaged fairly young and I let a good friend talk me out of what I really wanted. So now we are doing it over again. I''m all for resets. However, we are keeping my old ering. It will turn into my mother''s ring as we are currently expecting right now.

Sure, if you and SO have the desire and means to do so, why not?

You know what- I think no matter what a girl always has something she doesn''t like or to complain about. Haha... ideally, I would like a perfect ring with the perfect color, clarity, cut, symmetry, but we really had a budget and wanted to stick with it. What was most important to my husband was getting a GIA stone. Now, if I had opted for an EGL stone I probably would''ve gotten a really nice stone in my range. But with GIA the prices just go up so much we had to sacrifice somewhere. So the color for the stone is amazing and the clarity is great from the top. There had to be something wrong for it to be in our budget and it happened to be the symmetry. So, I guess we had to sacrifice that. It''s only .35 mm different. Do you think that''s pretty noticeable? I believe the ratio is 1.05 and from what I''ve been reading that''s generally acceptable.

Oh I know budgets, don''t worry!

But I guess when we make a trade off it is good to try and limit or to choose a trade off that won''t bug us, and it just sounded like you were worried about this one.

Have you not seen the diamond? To me .35 is a noticable difference in terms of rb diameter, but I don''t know about how it would look on a square. If you have seen it then surely you know if it is ok or not.

I know people who have changed their setting and they are what I would consider "normal" buyers. Most have been the married young and wanted something better quality and more mature looking.

As for the dimensions, yes that would look rectangular to me and I would notice it. Have you thought of getting it set so that the longer length is "east to west" instead of the traditional way. I''ve noticed that when I try on rings that are rectangular I really don''t notice the extra length as much and it just blends better to me.

Just a thought on that :)

Hi- thanks for all your comments you guys. Yeah, another jeweler had told us that when it''s set it doesn''t look too rectangular. You know what, we went and saw it a few times and my husband is the one who noticed the rectangularness. Then, when I went back to look at it after that I started noticing it a little too! But yes, hopefully if I set it east to west it won''t be as noticeable. I don''t really like it when people have a rectangular princess cut and they do it north to south cause then to me it looks like a radiant or emerald. I have 25 days to return it if I don''t like it so hopefully I do end up liking it. Will let you guys know. Thanks for all your input!

It''s pretty common here on PS, but I don''t know anyone else who''s done it in real life.

I switched out my stone (from an asscher to a round) and was planning on keeping the same setting, but I really love a 6 prong head with a round, so I''ll end up switching my setting as well.
