Used to be one months salary.

used to be 1ct,but now i'm hearing 1.5-2ct are the norm.

The way I've interpreted the "two months salary" rule is more "you're stupid to spend more than two months salary on something 6mm long, unless you've opened a savings account for this specific purpose and will pay it off without interest"

If you have debt, or are fresh out of college (a LOT of people shopping for e-rings are both), and she is disappointed in the .5c plain solitaire that cost you a month salary and a lot of re-budgeting and ramen-noodle-nights, then screw her. Make her buy her own damn jewelry!
