I am comparing two 2.04 carat round diamonds from a local diamond broker:

#1 - GIA certified, J color, VS2 clarity, Ideal cut (but I didn''t see any measurements or certificate), $10,302

#2 - Not certified, I color, SI clarity, no idea on cut but broker claims it would score a 2 out of 10, $8,160

Although I realize that there is insufficient information on the cut, they both looked fine to me. My wife (this is a 10th anniversary upgrade) will look at them later today, and she is probably more critical. For argument''s sake, let''s say that we are happy with the appearance of both stones. If the broker has a 30 day return policy, we have the non-certified diamond appraised, and are satisfied that we did not pay more than the diamond is worth, does it really matter that much if it is not certified? Or, would you stick to the certification and pay for the GIA stone?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

I'd ask him to send the second diamond to the GIA to be certified. If he isn't willing, I'd find another jeweller 'cos he's either got something to hide or isn't professional enough to give you really good service.

Either way I'd walk.

At these prices you must get info on cut and see the certificates.

Not certified, let the buyer beware
To the GIA stone - it may not compare

A reputable dealer may be your best bet
So there is no doubt of what you'll get.

Best of luck

A 2ct I/SI stone without report?

If you are really interested, ask for a GIA report. Also, on a 2ct stone you should ask wether the stone is SI 1 or SI 2 (or SI 3

). It is not acceptable to use split grades on such a large and expensive diamond.
