Ok. I have been reading the forums for a few weeks now and it has been a breadth of knowledge. To the point of firehose learning and overflow. Thank you all for that! With that said, I hope you all bear with me through this process.

First time buyer of any type of jewelry. It just so happens to be an engagement ring for my first time.

The plan is to buy a loose diamond online, as we have found a white gold channel type setting from a local shop.

****Budget 3k for loose diamond.

My limited understandings of what i'm looking for due to budget and white gold setting-

.7 minimum
Color-F
SI2-SI1

And here is where I'm getting confused regarding JamesAllen.

I've been told to look for 1-2 cut grade per the Tolkowsky Grading Scale, but i'm struggling to find that info...

The two that fit my specs per JA filters minus the 1-2 scale

https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.72-carat-f-color-si2-clarity-ideal-cut-sku-2253723

Any critiques? Advice? Should I sacrifice somewhere to go bigger ect ect?

My ears are wide open! Feel free to ask me questions and I will try to answer them to the best of my ability as well.
Thank you all for your time!

Can you post a link to a picture of the setting? That's an important part of knowing what diamond will work. Also the color of the side stones (channel stones) comes into play, so ask the jeweler what color they are if you don't already know.

Yes, I'd personally sacrifice a little bit on color (unless the wearer is super color sensitive) so you could go up a bit in size.

*This* would be my pick, which gets you 6mm, beautiful cut, good balance of color and clarity. Ask if they could provide you with an idealscope. You could get $100 off with a JA referral coupon and you could also ask for a PS discount: https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.82-carat-h-color-vs2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-2457533
There are also very nice:

Things that I did not consider!

Emailing them as we speak. We narrowed it down to two.... but they were an Allison Kaufman (.16ctw) and a Parade(.13ctw). One had a "tulip" type prong as I recall, which she seemed to like.

Ok I got the response, and this is the one we had both liked the best out of the two we narrowed it down too.

Are you sure that's the right link? You had said channel type setting?
That is the correct one, I was mistaken with the channel setting stated previously. My jewelry ignorance is showing ! I apologize.

She definitely is not " super color sensitive" as you state. I'm not sure she could tell much of a difference besides size during our local shopping of stones to be honest. So seems I can sacrifice for a larger size. Any changes in your thoughts seeing the setting posted above?

Thanks everyone for you time once again!

I still think a little bit more size would be nice and an extra oomph in the setting. Here is a comparison shot of one of the .72's you originally posted and the first .82 I recommended on a size 5 finger and I did a 1.8mm shank width on the ring.

Very pretty setting :D

Wow! I truly appreciate the mock up to show the differences. Her ring size is 6.5 So that definitely helps the visualization aspect since being in the stores can get overwhelming with so much.

I'm a 6.5 as well, and would definitely go for the larger stone.

Noted on going up in size and sacrificing a little else where. Will definitley trend in that direction.

I received the idealscope of the .82 just now and edit posting below

Any thoughts?

It's very nice - I'd go for it!

Looks great! I'd far rather have a well cut and larger H VS2 over an F SI2 that is smaller!

Thank you all for the advice! Bought and on its way :). Excited beyond belief.

image.jpg image.jpg As promised

Excuse the iPhone pictures. She really liked the tulip head when we were shopping. Now to propose here in the spring/summer.

Thanks again all!

Ok as promised. Not the greatest photo but was after the proposal at the local zoo.
