Nice stone but is the table too small?

Ok GZ, take a breath!!!

To answer your question about Vatche, yes, they are available at many retailers locally. Other nice and feminine settings are the Ritani, something like mine in my avatar. They have many delicate settings that are really nice and are available at many local places.

I personally don't think there is anything great about BN's settings. I've seen a few in person and none were great. But could have just been the few I've seen, I don't know.

Very smart man to remember that it's for HER not YOU! If she's pointed out baguettes and pears, then channel set rounds are probably not the way to go. They're very pretty if done well, but not exactly what I would call "delicate".

For a great solitaire, I would take a serious gander at the WF Legato Sleek Line setting. GORGEOUS.

I also second the idea of proposing with the DIAMOND only then picking the setting together. Believe it or not it's romantic AND shows that you're very thoughtful. If she's picky about her jewelry this will be the best way to go for you.

By the way, from what I can tell you''re doing a GREAT job on the stone! Good job! My husband wasn''t even willing to try. But at least he was smart enough to know that he wouldn''t do a very good job and so he just let me pick it all out. Funny thing is I did a terrible job the first time around. Picked a dud stone and not great quality on the setting or band......I feel so lucky that I''m getting to do this all over again, ESPECIALLY glad that I''m going with a vendor who offers an upgrade policy this time.

I personally think a round center stone with pear side stones is GORGEOUS. I just don''t know where to get that setting......and I typically see those with a HONKER center, like 2+ ct. As for bands to go with that, I would think either a plain band or a round stone band. I''ve never seen a band with pear cut stones. Baguettes aren''t my cup of tea either, but the round center with tapered baguette side stones is very classic and beautiful. From the 2 examples you''ve mentioned your GF liking, she''s got very classic taste so I''m GLAD you''re maybe re-thinking that x-prong setting you mentioned. It''s pretty, but NOT along the same lines as the examples you''ve given.

Actually having it set in a ''cheapie'' might be the best option in the short term.
Save a lot of stress ("will she like it?", "does she like it") and let her have a hand in the final look.
She''ll understand if I don''t want to make that decision without her input... could even make me look smarter than I am to her friends.

Uh, one thing though.... whats this about "shrinkage".... 3 days??? No, no, no!!!!!
This is one time, one time only isn''t it?! Ladies, you don''t really expect a ''do over'' do you???

EXPECT? No. Appreciate? Yes!

Just an FYI: They will send you a really temp temp setting usually with the stone, so don''t go out and buy one unless you want her to be able to actually wear the ring in the meantime. Then you can get a cheapie WG setting for a few hundred dollars.

Just don't let her find out about this place! It really makes the upgrade bug rear its ugly head!

If it were me, I would really love it if my BF bought me a gorgeous diamond like you're doing AND let me help with the setting!!! Best of BOTH worlds! Have you already ordered the diamond? If you're sure you're going with BN, their simple 4 or 6 prong solitaire settings are pretty cheap.... It would be nice to be able to propose with an actual "ring", the temp setting they would send with a "loose" stone would not be something you could slip on her finger to wear around......

Hmmm.... lots to think about here. I really appreciate the input.

I do have an appraiser lined up close to home and the stone would be covered under their insurance while in their possession. I may just leave it with them while I shop for a setting and then pick-it up after I/we select one. I understand that stones can possibly be damaged during setting, so I''m going to look into adding it to my insurance or getting a separate insurance for it prior to setting.

I''m also going to consider the solitaire in WG as a presentation setting so that she can choice her own after. She''ll tell me its fine no matter what but I think its the smart move to let her run with this part of it. Not every gift I''ve given her is a winner in her eyes - though I have had victory here and there. This one just seems too important to gamble on.
