Hello, I am on my way of purchasing my first diamond, Yay!!! I never realize there are so much to learn!
Beyond 4Cs I now discover the HCA and wonder in the real life how much difference can our eye tell? Two of my friends have kindly let me took photos of their diamonds. Light return and fire of the two under same lighting conditions are very similar to us however the photos of the two diamonds are very different?

Can anyone kindly comment are those two round diamonds cut differently or just one is better cut than the other? Which suppose to be the better cut ? I apologize for not being able to take a better photo.

I have attached a few photos of each of them. The first three photos are from the same diamond, the last three from the other.Thank you!

Anyone? Thanks

Yes, the first one is cut better than the second one.

The first one is much better cut than the second. If you want to post your wants (size, color, clarity, etc.), we can have a look online and sew what might suit.

These are measurements to help you stay in ideal cut territory with a GIA excellent cut stone.
table: 52-57.5 (but I personally prefer under 57)
depth: 60-62.3
crown angle: 34-35.0 (up to 35.5 crown angle can sometimes work with a 40.6 pav angle)
pavilion angle: 40.6-40.9 (sometimes 41.0 if the crown angle is close to 34)

Then, run those four numbers through the HCA tool and reject anything greater than 2.0 (1.0 not better than 1.9, this is used to simply reject stones). What you have left are worth pursuing and obtaining an Idealscope (IS; https://www.pricescope.com/tools/ideal-scope) or better yet, an ASET (https://www.pricescope.com/journal/what-aset-reveals-ideal-scope-does-not). We use the IS or ASET to evaluate light return.

If they can give you Hearts & Arrows images, that helps evaluate the cut and symmetry -- but does not replace an ASET or IS. https://www.pricescope.com/wiki/diamonds/hearts-and-arrows-diamonds

First one is preferable to my eyes.
