pls forgive me if i sound completely clueless, but i just had a quick question about the color of my diamond. it is a 1CT, VS1, H color round brilliant, and i notice that it looks completely different in different lighting - sometimes it looks beautifully clear, others, it almost looks opaque white. am i just imagining it, or is this normal? is it b/c it''s an H color? thanks for any help you can give!

Can you tell us what lab graded it?

Does your diamond have fluorescence?

It likely is not the color... As a VS1 I would assume that it is the cut, but really, your stone should never look cloudy if it is a VS1 unless there is a large cloud somewhere or something?

Also, does your stone have flourescence? Sometimes, flouro can negatively affect a stone and make it look milky or cloudy.

Do you have the certification number? If so, we can look it up and see if we can find any reason for this!

If your stone is graded by either GIA or AGS, it''s probably fine and normal.

I have an F center stone and the color looks totally different in various environments. In bright sunlight it''s slightly grey, in my living room with yellow walls it seems to show some of the wall color.

In a nicely cut stone I can''t imagine any color would turn "opaque" in a particular lighting condition. Even an ''O'' would be sparkly - just tinted and sparkly. Interesting...

I hate to state the obvious, but is your stone scrubbed and clean?

2 possible ideas.

Flourescence would be one.

However, the more likely culprit would be if you use hand lotion or something. A lot of times a diamond can get a film on it from the lotion on your hands and can appear cloudy.

Ditto, try cleaning your rings!!! They sell jewelry cleaner at the drug store for about $5. It comes in a red jar and is ammonia based. I let it soak for about 1 minute and then scrub the rings with a soft toothbrush under lukewarm water.

The lighting is the number one issue. Incandescent light may give off a yellowish tint and wall color can influence the appearance as well. And as others have noted, you do need to clean your ring at least a couple of times a week with a soft tootbrush. Even a D color diamond will look different in various lighting.
