Welcome!

There are some here who have gorgeous Marquise diamonds, but rounds seem to be most popular. Do you know for sure your GF wants a Marquise? They are beautiful diamonds, but are not for everyone. Assuming it IS what she wants, then it looks to be a pretty stone according to the photo you have. D IF are incredibly high specs, is this your personal preference? The reason I say this, is that you could drop both colour and clarity to perhaps a F or G and VS clarity and still have a very clean and white diamond. But of course if D IF is what you want, that is fine, I just wanted to throw that out there!

I would ask the vendor for an ASET image if they can get one, they are very useful for evaluating fancy shapes, you can read about ASET here.

Also you can't judge a fancy shape such as Marquise by the numbers unfortunately. I wish it was as simple as saying here is a chart, follow it exactly and you will end up with a stunning stone, but it doesn't work that way. But you can use the numbers as a guide, just don't rely on them too much - sometimes the most beautiful diamonds have numbers which fall out of suggested range such as this chart offers, so use as a point of reference only.

The most useful tools when choosing a fancy shape such as Marquise are detailed photos of the diamond, an ASET if available and last but not least, the eyes and skill of a trusted vendor to advise you.

That is best to make sure a Marquise is what she wants. It looks to be a very pretty diamond, if I was looking for a Marquise, this one is the type I like! Idealscope isn''t quite as useful as ASET for fancy shapes, but it is something. One thing, check carefully whether this diamond has a very noticeable bow tie or not, ask the vendor concerning this.

I agree with everything that Lorelei said, but since you didn't specify why you chose D IF (preference or just noobie being safe--we do see that sometimes around here), I will be more blunt than Lorelei has and point out that you pay a ridiculously high premium for that type of stone and you cannot typically *see* what you are paying for.

Okay, D color some eagle-eyes can tell from an E or F, but no one can tell an IF from most VVS or even VS stones with the naked eye. If you want to spend your money that way, it's totally your perogative! But if you would like to instead buy a larger stone or a fancy custom setting (can anyone say East-West set by Leon Mege??

) then you can go to the VS range without any harm but with a lot of saved $$.

Usually VS1 should be eyeclean, it is always prudent to check with the vendor I think, although some may think this is unecessary, to me when making such a large purchase - with a larger rock, I always think it never hurts to ask.

Maybe F or G and VS might be a good combo for you. You could go lower in colour still, I have a GIA graded H colour pear and it is very white, but sometimes with these sharp ended shapes, you can see a tiny tint of colour in the tips, I can with my pear in some lights, so just something to be aware of.

Do you have any ideas of setting? Some set their Marquise east to west these days, that seems to be a popular look.
