Hello:

I have been looking for about two months for an engagement ring. I have come to the conclusion that I will be purchasing from either Blue Nile or Union Diamond. The prices are too good compared to the local vendors and dealers I have spoken too. I have been on pricescope.com for about a week now and have found a wealth of valuable information. Can anyone provide any comments on the following diamond that I hope I have narrowed down. I have phoned and they are doing a visual inspection on the diamond tomorrow.

Carat wt: .78 ct
Cut: Ideal
Color: G
Clarity: SI1
Depth %: 62.2
Table %: 55
Symmetry: Excellent
Polish: Excellent
Girdle: Medium to slightly thick
Cutlet: none
Fluorescence: strong blue
Measurements: 5.93 x 5.88 x 3.67 mm
Grading Report: GIA

Thanks in advance for any help. I am on about a $2500 budget and I really hope I can stretch my money as far as possible without sacrificing too much quality. Please feel free to email me as well.

Can you check the depth please? If this is a round diamond I would expect the depth to be 62.2% thereabouts, is the 5 a typo?

Also the crown and pavilion angles are needed , assuming the angles check out when you get them make sure the diamond is eyeclean to your standards also. Check also that the strong blue fluorescence isn't making the diamond look cloudy in some lighting, this is rare but best to check.

Also we cannot email or PM here, all contact needs to be made on the open forums.

If you don't have the rest of the info needed, post the GIA report number and we can look it up from there.

Ditto.

Lorelei:

Thanks for the response. It is 62.2% and is a round diamond.

Crown angle: 34.5
Pavillion angle: 40

Thanks Justin!

Sorry we can't email each other here.

The pavilion angle is shallow which is undesirable, it would be better to have a pavilion angle of around 40.6 to 41 degrees. Do you have any others in mind?

ya, pavilion too shallow.

Thank you, I am extremely appreciative of this. Does that pavillion greatly affect the diamond? I am also looking at:

Carat wt: .77 ct
Cut: Select Ideal
Color: H
Clarity: SI1
Depth %: 61.8
Table %: 58
Symmetry: VG
Polish: VG
Girdle: TN-STK
Cutlet: none (pointed)
Fluorescence: moderate
Measurements: 5.9-5.84-3.63
Crown angle: 34.2? (hard to read)
Pavillion angle: 41.1? (hard to read)
Grading Report: GIA (6107745268)

Also, I have made the decision to stay away from EGL graded diamonds for the most part. I have read that the grading system is a little generous sometimes. Would you agree?

If you are on a budget and want a certain size diamond, and are prepared to get an independant appraisal during the return period to make sure a diamond checks out, then EGL graded diamonds if well cut can definitely be worth consideration if you can't find one with GIA grading that suits you.

This one looks better than the first one.

Here is the link, I would like to see an Idealscope image for this one if the seller can provide it and also to know what the grade making clarity characteristics are for this diamond such as clouds, feathers and so on.

Lorelei:

This is the package I am looking at ( http://www.uniondiamond.com/shopping/shopping_cart.php?action_type_id=14&entry_id=79490 ). I think if the idealscope comes back well (if I can get) I will purchase. Do you think I could stretch my dollar a bit further while keeping within my budget ($2500). Your comments are appreciated.

Thanks.
Can you retry the link for me please jheb? Nothing is showing up. Is the 2500 just for the diamond or to include the setting? If you could let me know then I can see what else is out there for you.

Lorelei:

One thing that I just noticed is that the clarity characteristics are cloudy.

I am not sure. The GIA off of their site said "Clarity Characteristics: Cloud". I just phoned again and they will try to get the idealscope but can''t promise. If I cant get the idealscope what do you think. The diamond is priced very well, however, now I am wondering why.

My main concern with grade making clouds in SI clarity grades is that sometimes they can make the diamond lose brilliance, so best to check with the vendor and an independant expert to make sure this isn't the case. IS image would be very useful to check the diamond out otherwise it is hard to say, it could be a great looking diamond or not as the case may be. If the clouds are verified not an issue and the seller has a good return policy then get an independant appraisal during the return period.

Thanks Lorelei. They are confirming everything for me. I hope to hear back shortly.

Good to know, I will keep an eye out and keep us posted!

Lorelei:

So under 10x maganification there is a small cloud in the diamond. They do not have it in there hands, but he wanted me to order in and they he can confirm if the brilliance is compromised. I assume that it would be, but how much is the question. Any advice you can provide would be appreciated? Should I look for another diamond. I think I am pretty much sold on Union Diamond.

Thanks again.

I don''t understand what you are implying here. The clarity grade is obtained at 10X magnification, of course the cloud will be visible under the loupe since it is graded SI1?

Sorry, I will try and clarify. I really do not know what this cloud may do to the diamond. Is it common? Does it drastically affect the brilliance? I can not get the answers from them and I realise it is hard for you to answer these. Mentally I automatically think I should look for another diamond, however, if this is common and typically expected in SI1 diamonds then maybe I will reconsider.
