Hello everyone,

I am new to the diamond/ring buying process and honestly a little clueless. I know what she wants for a ring and a diamond but I have no clue where to start. Everyone one this forum seems to be very knowledgeable and I was hoping you would help me out.

I know that she wants a solitaire ring and she says she doesn''t want to diamond to be be bigger than .8 carats.

We both really loved the quality of the tiffany rings but it feels like that i would be paying a bunch more for the tiffany name. So, where would I be able to buy a diamond that is of great quality but not overpriced like i feel the tiffany rings might be?

Also, the tiffany salesman sad that the cut was a big deal because if the diamond was too deep or to shallow it wouldn''t sparkle as much. So, what is a good depth for a diamond and how do i know if the cut is good?

Thanks for any knowledge or suggestion.

I agree that unless the Tiff brand is important to you (or her), you're paying an unnecessary premium for the designer label.

Set aside a few hours, go to 'knowledge' at the top of the page and start reading. That'll get you off to a great start

Hi and welcome. I would suggest spending some time-- a couple of hours looking through the "knowledge" tab and the resources that pricescope has to help educate you.

Or you can just go with our recommendations, and to get those just post your budget, color and clarity (I like H VS2 or SI1 eyeclean) requirements and ask for an AGS0 Hearts and Arrows to get a superideal precision cut diamond in a great setting Be sure to tell us your total budget so we can recommend settings, and price the diamond + setting accordingly.

ETA: It's not about the depth only. It's about how all the angles work together, to answer your original question.

Here's a recommendation. http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamond/diamond-detail/?product_id=AGS-1040397620049 plus http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/home/ring-details/?product_id=5336

around 4500 in platinum together.

What is your budget and desired color/clarity combo? We can help you find a diamond online or help you assess ones you see at a local jewler.

You can always get a beautiful solitaire for a great price with the recommended ps vendors.

Another thought - if you both really love Tiffany - it might be worth while looking at the second hand market (ex. eBay). There are always second hand Tiffany diamond rings for sale. Some may mind a second hand ring but to me ... no biggie ... a diamond doesn''t get worn out like clothing.

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. I have a budget of about $5,000 for the ring and the setting. She wants a yellow gold setting and she liked how the tiffany setting looked like it was made for the diamond compared to others where it just looked like they dropped a diamond in a setting and called it good.

I was a little worried about buying a diamond online but after reading around on this site it seems that everyone seems to have had a good experience with it.

Where would you guys recommend buying a diamond from? I realize that there are probably different dealers with different quality and prices.

Again, thanks.

Well I stuck with G/H color and VS2/SI1 clarity and from my preferred vendors (GOG, BGD, WF), these are the only ones that are currently available. Both are winners for sure, check if the SI is eye clean.
