Hi AdelynA, welcome out of lurkdom
35.gif

With that diamond, I would be afraid of obstruction issues due to the shallow angles. This is where the diamonds darkens noticeably upon close viewing due to the viewer''s head blocking the available light. The pavillion may be OK, depending on how the numbers were rounded, but 32.5 is a pretty shallow crown angle, 34-35 is ideal. Personally, I would pass on this one and look for one with a better cut.

(Shallow angled diamonds like this can make great pendant stones, as they are very bright, but are not recommended for rings due to the probable obstruction issues)

Hi Jet, thank you so much for the reply! As a newbie, I appreciate the advice!

But, remember, most people will see it on your hand, and only you will see it close up. I didn't take time to run the specs through HCA. But if HCA score is good, and size is important and the diamond doesn't have to be called in, maybe at least take a look at it anyway. It got a VG cut grade. I have a big shallower diamond, and it's impressive. For the price I paid, I decided so what if it has some obstruction close up. At arm's length, it doesn't.

edit -- I copied this re. parameters and shallow diamonds from some older posts on here and saved it as a text file on my computer:
from Todd Gray
Nice Ice Ideal Cut Diamonds
GemTrace Laser Inscribed Diamond Registry

crown 34.3 - 34.8
pav 40.6 - 40.9
table 53 - 57%
depth 59 - 61.8

shallows:
Firstly with the depth a good range is 60 - 62% to get a good spread, go too shallow and sometimes cut quality can suffer and you can get issues such as obstruction ( visible darkening at close scrutiny due to the viewer's head or body blocking light to the stone) if the crown and pavilion angles are also shallow ( what we call a shallow/ shallow), often these stones are better suited for pendants rather than rings.

However you can find some great diamonds which are a little more shallow, I would look at some diamonds which have no less than 59% for depth, crown and pavilion angles of around 34- 35 degrees and 40.6 - 41 deg respectively ( and get images if possible to check the stone out properly) and a table of around 56- 60%. You might be able to find what is called a 60 60 type diamond which could suit you if the angles as above are within good range.

HVVS, thanks for your reply. The Cut Advisor results were actually why I was interested in this stone, but I don''t know enough yet about the other factors. I''m glad to hear you like your stone-here are the results of the cut advisor on this one:

Light Return Very Good
Fire Excellent
Scintillation Excellent
Spread
or diameter for weight Excellent
Total Visual Performance 1.3 - Excellent
within TIC range

You have recieved some good advice so far even though the opinions are contradictory.
HCA is simply a rejection tool. If you are still inclined to pursue this diamond then you will need to get ASET and IS images which are important selection tools. Ask the vendor to supply these images. If I could not at least get an IS image I would definitly pass on this one.

Hi Adelyn

Obstruction is a definite risk with this stone, have you seen it in person or is it online?

Thanks to everyone for your helpful replies. I haven''t seen the stone in person--it''s online. We do have a diamond district here, but I haven''t had the time to make it to that part of town yet!
