I second checking food for itching/allergies/intolerances.

Our adopted Jack Russell (just over 2.5 years old, and we've had her for almost seven months, now) has always had home-made food. Her previous peeps made her cooked meat (typically pork, peas, carrots, and some canned pumpkin, or fresh squash/yams, for carbs) and I've continued to do so, as well as adding camelina oil. I was concerned about her not having all the necessary nutrients, so I checked online and found this: https://balance.it/. They have a "recipe generator" to advise how much your dog (or cat) needs according to age, weight, whether they're intact, lactating, neutered/spayed.

When our wee one arrived, she had had a history of scratching/itching/chewing on her feet. Her previous peeps used to give her meds. I'd rather find the cause and solve it that way.

Due to DH's sensitivities, we only use scent-free laundry detergent, no fabric softeners, and scent-free everything else in the house. We only use a steam mop on the floors, no detergents. I also went online and found/purchased scent-free shampoo and conditioner (she has a broken coat, and feels like a little Brillo pad without conditioner, LOL!) that's formulated for dogs with the correct pH value: https://www.earthbath.com/

It took some time, but now she doesn't scratch, and very rarely licks her feet. Yay!

I can not thank all you guys enough for the tips.
I'll admit, I'm stressed....I feel like we need to make important decisions now...but I'm not feeling informed enough.
The idea of cooking for Cole for example......right now it's only the kibble....
But we definitely want to feed some "wet" food.
The idea of buying cans... sounds more feasible given our lifestyle....
BUT..it's stressing me because I read we need to be consistent....plus with the scratching issue....and the need to have a consistent training methodology....it's a bit overwhelming.

I have never taken any photos of her.

Well, maybe one or two. I will see if I can retrieve them.
 
We found that not overly fancy worked best after trial and error of some very expensive foods.
We ended up putting ours on Taste of The Wild and their grain allergies vanished. We like a good quality oatmeal shampoo. We would sometimes get them Merrick canned food(cowboy cookout). Or, if applicable, they would just eat what we ate for dinner(we would separate out and not overly spice/salt).
No grapes, dark chocolate and no onions. Ever. They cannot process sugar well. Vanilla ice cream is okay once in a while.
No rawhide, pig skin is acceptable (Pork Chomps is a great company).
We love Three Dog Bakery.
Himalayan Yak cheese sticks.
Get an antler.
And a puppy Kong.
 
The lady at the kennel where she stays when I travel is very particular about food and she recommended (insisted) that I get her on Neutro. It's been good for her for almost 4 years. I also usually add just a little of whatever I might be eating, mainly just for flavor. Dry kibble seems like it would get a little boring.

She definitely liked to chew on things when she was a pup. The furniture took some hits! Not so much these days, but sometimes she cannot resist the corner of a wall. But she knows it's naughty and usually goes easy on it. Sometimes I think she does it just to get a rise out of me! She seems to always be looking at me out of the corner of her eye when she does it! :evil:

Our cats have always scratched the furniture with just that look

Yep! I promise you they chill out eventually. Ours hit 2 years and finally calmed down after being a hell puppy :bigsmile:

Oh that’s nothing. She tore up every one of of our azaleas. Our yard looked like a minefield. She would jump up and pull apples off our trees, so there were no apples lower than 5 ft off the ground. Our hardwood floors are still scratched to hell. Any stuffed animal, toy, or piece of paper left out was fair game for shredding.

She’s perfect now. Sweetest, most chill dog I’ve ever met.IMG_2623.jpeg
 
…after having two Smooth Fox Terriers at the same time, in which our credit card went into the Platinum+Diamond+Infinity range (just mocking up a ridiculously high status) due to emergency vet visits, this time we decided to get pet insurance for peace of mind. We went with Trupanion—lots of options, choose your deductible amount, etc.

She will now probably never need it, and we will have paid for it for no reason. :D

Bunny is adorable! @Texas Leaguer Is she a "second" or "third" dog that you've rarely taken photos of her? You know, like when people take a million photos of child #1, then only half a million of child #2, and by the time child #3 is born, they're lucky to have two or three photos taken of them. :D
 
The puppy teeth era, so not fun! We've had to talk to the vet 3 times about Bear's GI type issues. Right now he's. on white rice and boiled chicken, trying to get it more under control. Each dog is different. We've fed our chis the same food for 18 years, but Bear is having issues. So stressful trying to find options without upsetting his stomach again.

It was a joke. I will lose my man card if I admit how many photos I've taken of my little girl!
