Hi, I am new to the forum. I have been poking around for a little while trying to learn about diamonds, to help me decide on a diamond for an engagement ring. I think I have an ok understanding now of the aspects of diamonds, but I think I am obsesisng about every little detail and maybe not understanding the difference between the scales on how diamonds are graded. I am looking for a round one karat, I think I have settled on VS2. I just want it to look really nice. I think I might have found one. What do you guys think of this stone and the price? I pluged the numbers into the HCA calculator and it was 1.5, that is good, right? I just want to thank you in advance for any help and advice.

$6400

Just the picture from the site. It''s one of the pictures, that you can scroll over for a magnified view. Unfortunately, I have no idea what I am really looking for.

Use this search tool http://www.pricescope.com/sift.aspx and pick excellent - excellent for cut. This will help you find the best cut diamonds and the stones show the HCA scores too, hope that helps

Great to hear! Also, make sure you say to include AGS-0 and H&A, and make sure there are check marks for GIA and AGS labs. This will help you find the best of the best cut stones.

Sounds like you will find something, great!!!

Would this one be considered a better stone? I entered the figures in the HCA calculator and it was a .6.

Oh, I think I see what you are saying if not then sorry. Anything that performs below on 2 on the HCA is great, but a .7 is not better than 1.5; this tool is to weed out the bad performers. Once you do that then you can either post the stones here to get help on which is a better stone. The one you listed above does not say if it is hearts and arrows. I personally like this stone better if it is eye clean. http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/3957/

Is the goal to get as close to 2 as possible on that scale or do you want a higher number?

I guess then once you are under 2 your good to go, no matter what it is?

, but I can tell you that with the HCA, it is an elimination tool only, a score of 2 and under means you have eliminated most poor performers and that a diamond scoring under 2 is worth further consideration and evaluation by other methods such as Idealscope images, own eyes etc. A score under 2 does not guarantee you an excellent performing diamond, you then need to further judge by the previously mentioned methods such as Idealscope etc.

See this info on the HCA as you may find it useful.

Well this is just a tool to help weed out the bad performers. This is copied from the HCA page. "Most people prefer stones that rate 1-2 on a scale where: 0-2 Excellent, 2-4 Very Good, 4-6 Good, 6-8 Fair, and 8-10 Poor. Zero is almost impossible since many of the factors conflict.
HCA gets no info on symmetry, polish and minor facets; use it only to reject likely bad performing diamonds to narrow down your final selection. Ideal-Scope images and independent appraisers can help after that." Here is a picture from an Idealscope https://www.pricescope.com/idealscope_indx.asp

Good Old Gold, and Whiteflash have Idealscope (IS) images on there great performing stones and sometimes James Allen will have some too; I think you might be able to request them.

OK, I think I am good now. So now look to see that the symetry is rated very good or higher, then get the idealscope image if possible or have it looked at locally.

I am guessing you have a 71 GTO, no? Cool car!

Right now I am strongly considering the diamond in my first post. Yes, I have a 71 GTO I am working on restoring it now, although I haven''t done much to it lately. I need to get this ring out of the way, so I can get back to spending money on my toys
