Hello,

i am preparing to purchase an ERing for my girlfriend. I have been looking for a Man Made Diamond, specifically a pink one.
here is a link to my questions regarding the MMD:

I am very interested in a swirl tension setting.
my girlfriend just graduated from nursing school and i am looking for something very low profile without nooks and crannies. it cant snag on exam gloves and it cant have places to harbor nasty things.

what can you tell me about the various metals used for a tension setting ... i.e. 14k, 18k, platinum.
i would think that a stronger alloy is best. the jeweler also told me they can use an alloy that is sometimes called 19k that is some platinum mixed with 14k or 18k. he says it is stronger than 14k/18k and better for a tension set. what can you tell me about 19k and its potential for use in a tension set.

he was also a little shaky about the tension setting itself. he said the manufacturer will have to build a "little shelf" to ensure it is a proper fit and will hold the diamond in place. this will include a guarantee from the manufacturer. is this normal?

one last question ... The original quote from the jeweler regarding the MMD mentioned above and the swirl tension setting has put me over my budget of ~$3,000. So, my plan is to approach him with a no-nonsense no BS deal. I want to propose that he can make 20% on the deal. show me your invoice and add 20% for your pocket and then add state sales tax and sell me the ring. is this crazy?

Thank you for your help, Caitlin will be blown away!

Here are my comments - sorry for the incongruity of the post to follow ;-):

Can't comment on the negotiation part of it. I think that it can't hurt to try though.

One thing about tension settings - they're impossible to resize. You basically have to remake the ring. If you want something low profile that doesn't snag, would you consider a half or full bezel ring instead? I have a Sholdt semi-bezel and love it. It's also easily sizable.

I don't think I understand the part of the "shelf". The point of a tension setting is that the diamond's held in place by the metal pressing together. Wouldn't the shelf defeat the purpose of the tension?

Here's a thread on 19K gold: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/19k-gold-does-not-turn-yellow-please-weigh-in-experts.187082/... I don't think that I've heard of 19K as a combo of gold and platinum before, but maybe it exists. I would think that 19K means higher concentration of gold (compared to 18K) and gold is softer than the alloys they mix it with, so I don't understand how 19K gold can be harder than say, 14K gold - but I'm not an expert here.

As a side note, I think you should also not mention MMDs on Rocky Talky. I don't think that we're allowed to talk about MMDs here. But questions on tension settings are fine. :)
