I'm thinking about getting some diamond stud earrings to celebrate a new job or a new baby or just because! They just seem so classic and I don't have a pair. Despite reading MANY threads I'd still like some opinions please!

Budget maybe 7,000 - maybe up to $10,000. I"m wondering if I should go with ID Jewerly or BGD or somewhere else? I know I want about H color and eyeclean but maybe VS as well. With ID Jewelry would GIA excellent cut be good enough? The bigger the better! I tried on some CZ earrings and around 5-6mm is best. I want big but I don't know how big since I also dont' want to overwhelm my other jewerly? Or do I??

Btw.I love love this setting but then I guess no future ear jackets. It reminds me a bit of my classic 6 prong e-ring setting. (There would be dangles possibly).

And there is always Ebay, right???? wrong?

I would call ID about GIA Ex/EX stones. I don't think you need Hearts and Arrows precision cuts for earrings. Near Hearts and Arrows with fabulous light return is sufficient.

We simply cannot see the difference in ideal cuts and H&A cuts. There are plenty of excellent GIA stones out there. I have found it extremely easy to find matched pairs at WF, though, since their stones are usually cut with close specs.

I know you said a 7k budget but I saw these on sale at JBEG for 8500.00 (might be able to even get them for a bit less) and they are STUNNING!

They are 2ctw and bezel set

These are 1.46 ctw for under 4k

If you wanted H&A stones just contact any vendor and see what they can source for you. I also would consider contacting GOG to source AVR since those would also make amazing studs!

GOG AGS ideal diamond options below

Here are 2 from GOG that would work if you check out the length/etc
~3k with bank wire price .74 J VS1
http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/9006/

~3700.00 w bank wire and G SI .72
http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/8696/

OR the first one and this one since they are in your ears and no one will notice the very slight color difference or very slight size difference and the price is better at ~2600.00 still leaving room for the settings its a .76 K VS1
http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/9008/

OR for about 4k you could get 1.2 ctw AVR (they don't have anything just slightly larger-they have a big size jump and price jump)

Oh wow now I feel really confused! I wish that I could find some OEC to see In person to compare with modern cuts for fire and sparkle. Love the Jbeg pair. Also very tempted to just go nuts and spend about 15k on a pair around 2 ctw. Thanks for the info re cut. Anyone care to comment on how the Jbeg pair would perform compared to modern cut? And I don't know about the color plus they have no grading so I'd want an appraisal. Hmmmm.

And there is an intriguing pair around 17k at Bgd that are js which is a little low in color for me but they would be 2.4 tw. Wow. Did I mention how hard last year was?? ;)

I did something rather uncharacteristic, I went under budget and ordered the bezel set pair with French cut diamonds from JBEG! I got them today and they are just so lovely and go wonderfully with my other jewelry. I think these earrings are classic enough to work as studs for me and I have a bunch of pearl studs anyways. Thanks for all the advice posted here! Now I have to find my dream deco bracelet or Rhr!

Oh! Well I want to see photos then! How is the sparkle off rose cuts?

As an aside, I personally think 6mm is the perfect size for *forever* studs, it is BIG on the ears! My OEC is about that size and I am really contemplating finding a mate and making killer studs. I also think the bold flash of OECs is great for earrings. Very eye catching, and some of the less ideal common properties of the cut -- like obstruction under the table -- are moot on the ears.

I'm a tool, I misread your reference to french cuts as "rose cuts" haha! I saw your thread in SMTB. Love them!

Lol, I thought you did. Btw. I need to post on your thread because I LOVE everything you have!

What does obstruction under the table mean? I'm just learning about old cuts now. I think I'm going to end up with a cushion or asscher or other step cut since I feel a little odd getting a larger than my engagement ring round.

Yes, the size with bezel is awesome - in my opinion. And I wear the earrings without them wearing me.

Very nice! I had the chance to buy an amazing bracelet and passed...but it is haunting me. Still it was just too much (and too much for everyday wear). But of course I love one of the super pricey ones you posted!!

Old cuts have a tendancy to go dark under the table in some situations. When they are poorly cut they are dark under the table facets all the time, but even well cut ones like mine show obstruction, meaning when you look at it close your head obstructs the light and the center goes black. Modern RBs do this too, but it is less noticable to me, perhaps because of how they are cut (less deep) or just the faceting being different (splintery facets show obstuction less than big facets?). Try it with your earring, hold is close to your face looking straight into the table, like 10 inches away.

And thank you for the compliment on my jewelery :))

Interesting! I'll try that.
