Never seen a setting like this before, its got a 1 carat diamond . Whats the setting called? I think its so unusual. Does anyone here have a similar ring like this?

I've not seen one exactly similar but seems an older style designed to make the stone seem bigger. The height would drive me nuts!

This is a gorgeous ring @Isobel. The diamond is beautiful. It is an Old Euopean cut. I think the setting would be called a buttercup setting and hopefully someone more knowledgable will correct me if I'm wrong!

Wow that's a high setting but I love height because it makes the diamond really standout! This is a beautiful ring, I'd call it an elevated buttercup illusion setting, that's the best I could come up with.

Thank you for the reference to Natylad. Her setting is the modern illusion setting I love so much. She says that it was made by Tezapsidis Jewelry in Greece.

After giving her a good steep in soapy water over night, she seems to have come to life after been hidden away all these years. I've been trying to nip my mother's brain about it, to see if she could tell me more but all she said was that it was given to her many years ago but just hid it away . I measured the diamond and its coming up as 7mm as my mother has always been told it was 1 carat. What cut would you say is it?? Also the hall mark is on the outside of the band, tried to take a picture of it but is really hard as I'm using my camera on my phone unfortunately , anyway think its an eagles head .....and other thing is should I get it reset or just leave it as is. Thankyou for all you advise, I really appreciate it xxx

It's a beautiful diamond, and a very nice size! It looks like an Old European cut (OEC), a precursor to the round brilliant. They were prevelant from around 1900 to the 30's.

Oh my goodness that first picture of her on your pointer finger is amazing, such a beautiful diamond. Looks bigger than a carat to me but it is also very white which could be making it look bigger. You could go on Amazon and purchase a pair of calipers to measure it. Normally I would say bring it to a jeweler to measure but that's probably not the safest option right now.

As for the setting, do you like it? It's good that there are six prongs holding the diamond, the more prongs the better IMO. The setting is a little high so that increases the risk of damage from accidentally banging or hitting the diamond. You could see about a good jeweler lowering the setting. Of course you could just also enjoy it as is and reset it down the line.

This is a beautiful ring, I can't get over how amazing the diamond looks after a good soak!

I decided to take the ring awalk with my dog to see if I can get a good outside picture of it, wow I really am bad at taking pictures!!! I love the setting but find it too high , thats why my mother never wore it, she said it was too fancy for her lol !

Beautiful diamond and a cool setting! If it were me, I would put the diamond in a lower setting where I could safely wear it without worry. I think the original setting is very cool so I would get a CZ or inexpensive colored stone and wear it as a RHR. Enjoy!

I've sent her off to my jeweller. He is going to lower the setting and make it look more modern looking for me, Ive asked him to keep the star design as i love that part about it. Please feel free to shoot over some nice setting designs that I can maybe use and send over to him.

Yes , I tried typing the value in to that , diamdb website and was getting all confused, as I was putting 1 carat in and the measurements and it was saying it was " inadequate" and saying it was a spread cut??? I havent a clue on diamonds lol.

So you recon its bigger than a 1 carat?

Yes, the way OECs are cut, they tend toward higher weight (don’t we all, says the woman who has been Covid carb-loading for weeks).... they are neither shallow in the pavilion nor in the crown, as they are were cut to maximize weight rather than spread. However that is desirable if you ask me.

Upon searching ‘Art Deco French 18k solitaire’ through google, I’m wondering if you might prefer to resell the original setting instead of alter it. It may at first seem an acquired taste, but there is a market for it. How does that make you feel? Are you sentimentally attached to the setting? Or the stone? Or both?
