Negotiating diamond price w/ local jeweler and online price?

I've been talking with a local jeweler on finding some diamonds. She has suggested a few but I have been doing my own searching online as well. I have found a diamond that I am interested in and within my budget. Is it appropriate to tell her of the diamond and try to negotiate the pricing of the diamond with the online price? the diamond I have found is pretty much available to any of the online diamond retailers so I am sure it can be available to my local jeweler or am I wrong?

Yes, it's probably available to her as well. She may or may not be willing to match the price because she's got a more expensive business model, not the least of which is all of the 'free' advice you've been getting from her but it doesn't hurt to ask. I assure you, you won't be the first. Just show her the ad, tell her what you're thinking and see what she has to say.

Remember to allow her some fair compensation for her time as well as for her increased costs of doing business. She is most likely paying a percentage rent in addition to her per square foot rent and can not match the price exactly of the internet vendors who have lower overhead and who would never be paying percentage rents.

Having a good local jeweler on your side to check prongs and polish your rings for fee is always a good thing too. Yes, it will cost a few dollars more, but the value of having good local service might actually be well worth it.

Yes I was thinking about that too. She said there would be free services available with my purchase such as rhodium dipping and resizing...but then online purchases will not charge me tax. I don't know what is the better deal..

According to the law you are required to report your purchase and pay the tax on it when you file your State income tax. The fact that 99% do not does not change the law.

We do not know anything about your diamond, so we have no idea if the tax is a big or little deal, but it is definitely going to be part of the total negotiation. You will have to decide if the value and convenience of the free ring sizing and rhodium plating etc is worth a few extra dollars and at what point they fail to be worth it.

Many see an extra ten dollars as to much and some see an extra one to two thousand on a big purchase as well within reason. Those are questions that you have to answer for yourself.

One big advantage of dealing with a local is that you will get to see the diamond without having to pay for it first. That way you get to know that your paper evaluation was correct or not, without putting your dollars on the line. You might even get to see two or three diamonds at the same time that way.
