Need your opinion on setting height - Tiffany Style 6 prong

Hi Everyone,

I bit the bullet and purchased a diamond I found at Eternity Diamonds. My gf never specified a setting but her tastes are very classic and timeless, so I decided to have the diamond set locally with a jeweler I became friendly with. We picked out a setting that was similar to the Tiffany 6 prong (yes, I know it is different and not a dead-on replica), but I wanted to balance price with style.

I just got it back today and love the way it looks. My only concern is the height of the diamond. To me, it looks like there is a lot of dead space or open air underneath the diamond. I talked to the jeweler and he said that they could lower it, but my question is whether or not that would make the prongs look stumpy and awkward. My plan is to let my gf decide after I propose, but wanted to get a general feel from the rest of you.

If you think it's set too high, let me know what options I may have altering this ring... my thought is to lower it and think out/taper the prongs some more.

Thanks.

Personally, I think it's set a tad too high - but some people like high settings, so I think your idea of letting your gf decide is a good one. I don't really know enough about benchwork to discuss how this could be achieved, but hopefully your jeweler would be able to address your concerns and questions - or others will come along that can!

Maybe it's just the angle of the photo, but to my eye the stone looks a little crooked in the setting? My apologies if I'm wrong!

Re: Need your opinion on setting height - Tiffany Style 6 pr

Thanks -- I think it's the angle of that picture, because I noticed the same thing in this picture but in person it doesn't look crooked at all.

Re: Need your opinion on setting height - Tiffany Style 6 pr

Yes, I think it is too high. You almost have to take a picture to get a stone set the right height. Mine is a similar style and the diamond is set lower. I'll show you a side view to compare. I like the culet (point) of the diamond to be around the height of the top of the shank. I'll see if I can find any others with a setting like yours.

In thinking about it, sometimes those rings have heads that come in different heights. It might need to have the whole head changed to a lower one. I would be afraid of a diamond being set that high because it would be more easy to whack it on things and possibly damage the diamond.

Hi!
I think your setting is a tad high but I like it that way. I tend to like high settings.
The "dead space/open air" seems more noticeable because of the design.
T&Co's classic setting or Vatche U113 diamondseeker posted does not make it seem like the diamond is set that high than
it really is because the head contours the bottom shape of the diamond more tightly and it sits on top of donut.
Slightly raised shoulder seems to play a big part in making the whole setting look not so high as well.
The head of your ring starts from the base of the band w/o the donut, producing more space below the stone.

Re: Need your opinion on setting height - Tiffany Style 6 pr

Thanks for the replies.

@ Diamondseeker - your ring is the one I modeled it after. I actually gave them a picture of your sideview and told them to make it as close to that as possible.

@ greenteabiscuit - I agree about the donut. That's something I didn't quite realize until after it was set.

I may go back ans see if they can set it lower in the current setting and if not, ask to swap out the head to something maybe with the donut.

I'm hoping they can do it. I know I said I would leave it to my gf, but I know she will have the same thoughts I have. My only fear with that is that it looks stumpy because the prongs are so short. Thoughts on that?

I'd go back to your setting jewelry store (as there is nothing wrong w the diamond) and ask if it can be set lower - bring in a photo of DS's setting AGAIN so they can model it properly. If it can't be done, go for the switched head, because, yes, it does appear to be set too high.

If you can pick up on it, so will your FFI and as noted above, there is a risk of bumping it and knocking the setting or damaging the stone... strange things can happen when accidents meet diamonds!

Re: Need your opinion on setting height - Tiffany Style 6 pr

Great advice and I'm going to take care of this first thing Monday. I'm kicking myself now since the idea in my head was the Vatche design with a few tweaks, and if I'm not going to get that I'm going to be bummed. Going back on it, I should have just went that route in the first place :((

Re: Need your opinion on setting height - Tiffany Style 6 pr

What changes did you want to the Vatche setting?
I went and looked at Vatche U113 before and I was told Vatche will make
whatever changes I want(pave, thickness/height change, etc) for about +1k more in platinum.

If you are open to getting non-custom setting, your jeweller may be able to find something
like this as well, because I saw this setting(or something very similar)
from a few different local jewelry stores in my smallish town...

I think this setting is pretty, too!

But then, if you are going to let your girlfriend choose, why not propose with the current setting?

Re: Need your opinion on setting height - Tiffany Style 6 pr

This was driving me NUTS trying to find pictures for you of a similar setting, but I finally did!!!

See the third post down by Patty. There are two showing the diamonds set at a correct height, in my opinion. Perhaps you can also print these out since they didn't really go by your first illustration. They may need to change out the head and I would insist on it being done right because you showed them my ring which has the stone set much lower than they set your stone.

You will note that your setting is like the first one she posted with no doughnut (peg) under the prongs whereas mine and the second one do have the doughnut/peg. But I really think the height of the diamond on the top one (most like yours) is MUCH better than how they set yours.

Re: Need your opinion on setting height - Tiffany Style 6 pr

DS I'm very glad you chimed in since your ring was what I wanted to model against. I totally agree on the picture you found and the setting height. My only fear with that is that the prongs on that start closer and mine outside the base.

Here is how I see my options:
1. Try to lower the setting as is.
2. Swap out the head for something more fitted to the diamonds shape.
3. Order the vatche, see if I can recoupe some money on the first setting and save a lot of trial/error.

Decisions decisions.

DS- do you have any side view shots of your ring?

Re: Need your opinion on setting height - Tiffany Style 6 pr

Hi Everyone and thanks for your replies and opinions. I went back last week and asked for it to be re-set. I brought multiple pictures for examples... The Stuller Solstice was the closest setting and I found a picture that was nearly identical.

Here is the finished product -- it turned out great! Better pictures to come once I can get my hands on a better camera (this is from my iphone).

Thanks again for your advice.

That was exactly my reaction!!! A big sigh of relief. I was worried that I still may not be happy even after they made the tweak.

Sincerely thank everyone here -- this website (and the people on it) were/are super helpful in my decisions.

Re: Need your opinion on setting height - Tiffany Style 6 pr

It looks perfect now! MUCH better at the lower height. My diamond is set in a very high 4-prong setting and this is making me want to change the head to a lower 6-prong...

It looks much better set lower.

Re: Need your opinion on setting height - Tiffany Style 6 pr

Looks lovely, they did a wonderful job with this one!! Yay!

Re: Need your opinion on setting height - Tiffany Style 6 pr

Oh, that is SO much better! I am sorry I missed your last question to me about more pictures, but I am so glad the jeweler was able to lower it to the right height! It looks great now!

Re: Need your opinion on setting height - Tiffany Style 6 pr

It looks 100% better!

Re: Need your opinion on setting height - Tiffany Style 6 pr

Totally agree! I'm very happy with the new and improved version.
