Hi all,

I am helping my 80-year old father purchase a 3.10 carat round brilliant diamond (H color - VS2 clarity) with ring setting for my mother for their 50th wedding anniversary. He is interested in a three-stone infinity ring setting (see in the link below).

In discussion with the design team, the jeweler who would create the ring setting recommended 0.5 carat stone size for each of the two side stones adjacent to the center stone. However, it is the design team's thought that each of the two side stones should be between 0.25 - 0.33 carat each to keep the price down but also to keep focus on the 3.10 carat center diamond. The diameter size of the center stone is approximately 9.45 - 9.50 mm.

Still waiting on the design image; but wanted to get thoughts on two questions:

1. Generally, is this a nice ring setting for a 3+ carat diamond size; and
2. Thoughts on the 0.25 - 0.33 carat size of the side stones in relation to the 3.10 carat center stone. Do you think it would look attractive given the proportions?

Congratulations on your parent's 50th! What a lovely ring to commemorate it! To your questions. A 9.5mm stone in that setting will cover a lot of finger real estate. I think the side stones should be kept smaller (0.25-0.33) range to keep the focus on the center. More of an accent. It will be a stunner! Please post pics of the finished ring

I definitely agree with smaller side stones so they don't compete. Can the design team send you depections with each size so you can visualize?

Thank you for your thoughts! I just received the CAD imageunnamed.png that shows the proportions.

Very pretty - I am a fan of smaller side stones that don't compete with the center stone. You also have to keep in mind the mm coverage of all three stones in relation to the size of her finger.

The ring appears to sit pretty high to me and perhaps 1) will be prone to being knocked into things or 2) will be top heavy such that it spins around all the time. You might double check with the person doing the cads. In reality it might be fine.

Personally, I would go with the smaller side stones since there is a lot design wise already going on the band itself. However, I think it would depend on whether your mom's tastes run flashy/blingy or more understated. All that said, what a lovely gesture for your mother. I am sure she will be thrilled!

HI:

What would your Mom prefer in terms of jewellery--what does she (currently) wear?

cheers--Sharon

Thanks for your thoughts! My mom actually helped select the ring setting design. She does not have flashy/blingy taste so she does not need big side stones; rather as you all have recommended smaller side stones that perhaps accent the center stone. With that said, the design team came back and actually recommended keeping with the standard side stones that typically would be set with the ring setting (slightly smaller visually than 0.25 carat diamonds previously being considered). Basically, it's the original ring setting shown on the website but will be strengthened to support the 3 ct diamond.

Good call out on the ring potentially being top heavy. I will raise this with the jeweler.

What size ring does she wear? If she has small fingers I will go out on a limb and say that all the extra stones are going to take the focus away from the big diamond in the centre and as a person who wears a size 4.75 one hand and a 5.00 on the other, side stones might be great in theory but when you have small fingers they end up sitting down next to the gaps between your fingers or on top awkwardly rather than being comfortable.

Thanks arkieb1. She is a 6.25 ring size.

I love reading stories about couples celebrating milestone anniversaries! ❤️❤️❤️ Congratulations to them!

I think the ladies have covered your questions. I have one for you though - have you given any thought to the prongs? I ask because I think claws/double claws would be stunning with that design. With such intricate twisting on the setting, having basic prongs would almost be a shame.

P.S, I had to chuckle at your comment that your mom wasn't in to flashy/blingy jewelry. You can't wear a 3+ carat diamond without being flashy/blingy :) :) :)

Ditto on the claw or double claw prongs...so much more elegant. Your mother is a very blessed woman!

Thank you all for your wonderful comments and kind words!
