Hi,

I have been looking for a diamond for to buy for an engagement ring for my girlfriend in the gold and diamond souk in dubai. i have come across what i think is a great stone. It is a round cut, 2.02 carat, E Colour VS2 but on the IGI certificate it mentions it has a strong flourences. I have read that flourences can make the diamond milky? but after loooking at in all types of light i don''t see it. It is a brilliant looking stone. How much should i look at paying for such stone?

ANY ASSISTANCE WOULD GREATLY BE APPRECIATED!

How well is the stone cut? Can you get the numbers on it? Crown and pavilion angle, depth? Table? Overall depth %? If you can get that and an Ideal Scope image there are several experts here that can help you out.

Thanks Lone_Wolfe. Information below.

I'm not the expert on the numbers, but that stone is a very deep cut. It faces up about the same as my 1.57 ct that is ideal cut. Keep looking, you'll find much better cut stones out there

Ditto that, the stone is highly likely going to show light leakage and it is going to look a similar size to 1.5 carats, not what you want when you are paying for a 2 ct stone....Compare it to a better cut 2 ct stone and see how much smaller this one looks.

Thankyou for the advice. The place i bought it from will change it so i appreciate your comments. Below is the information on the stone. what would you recommend i look for when looking for a new stone? Thanks again.

Here is a guide some of us use to find a well cut diamond, bear in mind it is a guide only and proportions which fall outside of these ranges can be perfectly suitable in some cases.

depth - 60 - 62% - although my personal preference is to allow up to 62.4%
table - 54- 57% - although if you prefer a larger table you can go up to 60% or a little higher
crown angle - 34- 35 degrees
pavilion angle - 40.6- 41 degrees
girdle - avoid extremes, look for thin to slightly thick, thin to medium etc
polish and symmetry - very good and above

note - with crown and pavilion angles at the shallower ends ( CA 34- PA 40.6) and steeper ( CA 35- PA 41) check to make sure these angles complement in that particular diamond - eyeballs, Idealscope, trusted vendor input - check as appropriate!

As the above implies, configurations depend on each other. A little give here can still work with a little take there.

From expert John Pollard.

With that said, here's a "Cliff's Notes" for staying near Tolkowsky/ideal angles with GIA reports (their numbers are rounded): A crown angle of 34.0, 34.5 or 35.0 is usually safe with a 40.8 pavilion angle. If pavilion angle = 40.6 lean toward a 34.5-35.0 crown. If pavilion angle = 41 lean toward a 34.0-34.5 crown.

GIA "EX" in cut is great at its heart, but it ranges a bit wider than some people prefer, particularly in deep combinations (pavilion > 41 with crown > 35).

Hi,

I purchased a diamond last week for my soon to be wife but after further follow up was not 100% satissfied. The shop i bought it from said i could return it no problems. They sent me some diamond certificates to look at. Can someone please have a look at the reports at the bottom of this email and give me their opinion??? It would be greatly appreciated!!!

Ditto, the above do not have good crown and pavilion angle combos and could show light leakage, also they have excessive depth.
