Looking at close to a $2000 difference ... does the size and color justify the difference?

Didnt sleep all last night .... need help .... the 1.358 is a budget breaker but its so damm pretty =p

It's going to be in a micro pave halo setting.

I know I should go for the smaller one ... would face up more like a H and still hit that magical 1.2 but for some reason my brain keeps telling me that the 1.358 would look huge LOL

Re: Need to choose in a couple hours - talk some sense into

Is it going in that exact setting or are they making you a setting to fit the stone you pic?

Re: Need to choose in a couple hours - talk some sense into

exact setting ... she fell in love with it when we were ring shopping early in our relationship.

Just stored the image in the back of my mind and went back to the jeweler in downtown los angeles to find it again =p

I know the setting will make it look larger so I am really torn to if going up in .147 ct and color would justify the price.

Still need to pay for wedding but you only live once I guess LOL

thanks for the prompt reply <3

Re: Need to choose in a couple hours - talk some sense into

No I'm saying, is that setting getting your stone plopped in it or are they making you want to your stone size

Re: Need to choose in a couple hours - talk some sense into

Go for size and higher color, she will be wearing it the rest of her life...what''s $2k?

http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamonds/diamond-details/1.358-h-si1-round-diamond-ags-104064496006

Did you check GOG...they have several 7mm H & A's for 8k? Click on "reserve" to see price if not listed.

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/10582/

Personally I would want this larger sparkler...the AVR's are unique and to die for;

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/9867/

No one will have a stone like this AVR that she knows. L's can face up surprisingly white too, especially with the cut being perfect. Watch their videos...plus GOG will do a video for you featuring several stones and you can choose the one you like best. Sure will help to make a decision. Would love to see a video with a couple of MRB's next to this large AVR.

But you can't go wrong with BGD or GOG stones...good luck! Decisions, decisions.

You have to decide in 2 hours? Why rush a large purchase like a diamond she will be wearing the rest of her life???? Oh well.

Re: Need to choose in a couple hours - talk some sense into

I was just asking about the setting because if it wasn't being fitted to the stone you'd have to buy a stone to fit the setting..

If you will never upgrade, I'd pick the AVR or the H 1.5 personally. Though the AVRs are so special I'd get that. The color really I don't think would be an issue.

Re: Need to choose in a couple hours - talk some sense into

I agree what's $2000, go for it!!!

Thats the thing i have been noticing lately ... most people stop wearing their rings after they have children so this would be a lifetime ring but only for a few years IMO

No rush on the purchase have been deliberating for over 3 months now ... just that the perfect opportunity has arisen this weekend to surprise her with the proposal ... since she knows its coming its almost impossible to surprise her but I think I can do it this weekend

=p

do you have a AVR?

how is the sparkle?

Well then what was the size in mm that setting would fit? You can't but a stone that's to big or too small and expect to fit it into a halo very easily.

Avr stands for Austin vintage round, that L antique looking stone that was just posted.

they have two rings they are holding on for me

one that will fit a 1.25 or less and one for a larger one

either one will be adjusted for the diamond I choose

now im looking at the AVR hahaha

thanks for all the feedback all

i wish i could hug you all thru the computer (dancing) :appl:

Re: Need to choose in a couple hours - talk some sense into

Being budget conscious myself I would have no problem going with the 1.2. I spent a lot of sleepless nights trying to get it just right and I must say that I succeeded by the look on my FIs face and all the compliments that she now gets. There's still a wedding to plan and the ring is just one part albeit the most important one with the wedding coming in a very close second so don't feel bad not getting the bigger stone. That is unless she has seen it and is drooling over it :lickout:

Re: Need to choose in a couple hours - talk some sense into

That is a really nice setting Niel and if i had to choose btw the AVR and the 1.35 I would also choose the AVR since they are basically the same. I might have a slight tint being an L and as long as he/she is ok with that I would go with it.

Re: Need to choose in a couple hours - talk some sense into

wow that setting is perfect!

its like the one she loves but better in my opinion

If only I knew about it before

guess i can always change it out later LOL

thank you so much for expanding my horizons!!!

Haha well if you like do you have to but the one from your local guy? Did you put a down pmnt or something? I know its not going to be done this weekend but if you have time.

I will say, if you think you won't be able to surprise her and want to, you could always just do it on a Tuesday morning before work or something. Now THAT shed never expect!

Re: Need to choose in a couple hours - talk some sense into

Personally I would be wary of the AVR because of the L color. In a halo setting like the one she wants, there will be a huge color mismatch. I would stick to H color and no darker than I. Have you seen AVR in person? If not, I would stick to round brilliant, that is a safe bet (although not as unique).

Re: Need to choose in a couple hours - talk some sense into

Its not going to be a HUGE mismatch. Slight difference, but huge isn't necessarily true
I have a K (albeit its a smaller stone). And next to the melee of one of my other settings I can't see a difference. Plus, colors like that are more flattering in a cut like that.

If you can. Hold of proposing this weekend, I think getting it home and looking at it is a great idea, then take it to your jeweler and see if it fits in your setting (or of course you could just have it set in that ritani ;) )

But I do t want to throw of your proposal if you've got it all in the works

I'll just say, when I got my k in the mail I was astonished by how white it was.

I agree with this. Many would be perfectly happy with an L colored stone but if you aren't sure, I wouldn't risk it.

Re: Need to choose in a couple hours - talk some sense into

AVR is August Vintage Round. They are custom cut Old European Cut (OEC) faceting for high performance. the faceting is chunky vs. the splintery faceting of a Modern Round Brilliant (MRB) Modern rounds are the most popular but I've never really cared for round stones until I saw the AVR's. Now I'm gaw-gaw over these rounds, when my personal preference has always been for square cut cushions. Antique stones are cut with this faceting (OEC, Old Mine Brilliants OMB (cushion)) and have that chunky faceting, but finding an antique stone with optimum cutting and performance is not easy so Jon at GOG started having them custom cut for performance.

GOG also has AVC's August vintage cushions:

Watch this video to see the difference in faceting and performance of these round ideal cut stones:

Ideal Cut vs Hearts & Arrows vs August Vintage OEC vs Solasfera

Show me your AVC's and AVR's... the first ones posted happen to be L color AVC's...enjoy:

(My daughter is about to become engaged and she did not know which cut of diamond she preferred. I showed her the videos on AVRs, MRB's etc and she chose the AVR above them all...but it is a personal preference.)

I hope you put off your engagement surprise until you spend more time educating yourself on diamonds, although like i stated above you can't go wrong with a BGD or a GOG stone. Call GOG and ask how the L color will look with the halo setting you found. But most people choose the diamond first...also GOG might just have a halo setting around too that would fit the stone of your choice. They have several MRB in your budget...I would call them before I decided on anything. They are very helpful.

Hope this helps.

Re: Need to choose in a couple hours - talk some sense into

Oh that AVR.....

That being said, how much does she know about diamonds? I'd be thrilled with an L AVR but some people probably won't be able to get past the L colour. I've shown people H diamonds next to a D and an E and they can't tell the difference but will say straight after that H colour diamonds are not as nice   it's a mind thing.

However rounds in halos are a dime a dozen these days (still nice) and nobody she knows with probably have an AVR so it will be a fairly unique ER which is a great thing!

Re: Need to choose in a couple hours - talk some sense into

OK, here you go! L AVR vs I color H & A....LOL, which would you choose?

I would def go with the AVR it completely blows the H&A out the water to me. I have read a lot about the different cuts but that is the first time I have looked at a video to see the differences. WOW

Re: Need to choose in a couple hours - talk some sense into

You should buy the diamond and then have the setting custom made for that particular mm. It makes me extremely nervous that your jeweler will "make it fit".

The setting is a pave halo also know as a HW (harry winston) inspired halo. Check out this thread-

Charmy's guide on How to Make a Harry Winston Inspried Halo Ring: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/cushion-101-my-experience-in-making-a-harry-winston-halo.183473/

I would personally spend more money on the setting and have a better version of it made.

Ditto.

I'm sure the jeweler is trying to accommodate the OP's time frame...but we are trying to "talk some sense" into him as he requested in his post. Take your time. Getting a less than perfect ring is not worth the "surprise" factor IMO. I'm sure she would prefer a perfect ring over a second of "surprise".

Re: Need to choose in a couple hours - talk some sense into

I agree A! If the price in the picture is correct - roughly 2.6k for that ring I would contact Mark at ERD and have them make you a CAST/ CAD version of it. I believe he charges in that ball park. He might also be able to find a diamond for you and cut you a deal. Just .02 cents.

OP for what it is worth I have coveted the HW halo for years. I've had a few upgrades and dress changes. If I could go back in time I would have done it right the way I wanted it done the first time. If you have a time restriction then I would propose with a band or something she can switch to her right hand if she wants down the road. If pave is not done well the melee will fall out and I always hesitate to have anyone who is not known for thier pave make this style of ring. Hence that is the other reason I would invest more in the setting.
