Hello Everyone,

I have been a long time lurker and have learned so much from these forums. Now its my time to post.

I am going in on Monday to look at a wax in person and I wanted to know your thoughts. My first impression is that the prongs are too large and chunky. Do you think they will be square and chunky when "finished"? What would you change about this setting?

First the stone.

Color: E
Clarity SI1

Setting will be in platinum. Please let me know your thoughts.

I like the setting. It is very elegant. Any time anyone posts a wax photo around here, they worry that it looks too bulky, but when the actual ring is made, it's much more delicate. I'd ask your jeweler if that's the case and can he show you an example of finished prongs.

It looks like a beautiful setting. I would also ask if the prongs would be that pronounced. I would guess they just look large in the wax mounting.

Yes, I think they will look much more delicate when made. You do need good protection for those corners, so you wouldn't want prongs too tiny.

what type of cut is the center stone?

Do you think I should go for a claw type prong or a square? I'm not sure if you can see it but the stone is beveled in the corners. Anyone have any other prong recommendations?

I think the prongs will be fine; the mold is cast that way so that the prongs can be shaped to hold the diamond later. I highly doubt they'll be so square and bulky. Very elegant!

Oh, and I think a claw prong could be pretty! It would match the tapering on the ring, I should think. As long as it doesn't overwhelm the stone! It's hard to judge.

So right now the ring is 2.8mm tapering down to 2.2mm. Do you think I should bump up the shank to 3mm? Price difference is about $122

I wouldn't bump it up to 3mm. I think the 2.8 will be fine...

One thing I'm concerned with is the durability. This ring will be a daily wear ring and she probably will knock it around a bit. Do you think .2 will provide additional strength from bending and twisting?

anything 2mm and greater is plenty safe, especially with a plain shank like you are doing, IMO.
